The 2022 Sonata’s five-year or 100,000 kilometre powertrain warranty helps reduce long-term ownership risk, especially if you’re buying a higher-mileage example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gives you the essentials, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. If you want the most complete feature set, look closely at the upper trims and note that the N Line brings the sportiest presentation.
• Powertrain: The Sonata offers a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder, and an N Line-specific turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder. All versions are front-wheel drive, and there is no all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
• Infotainment: Base versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, six speakers, USB, and a rear-view camera. Higher trims add a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 L/100 km on lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km on the N Line. In testing, it averaged 7.7 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the value play if you want the Sonata’s core strengths without stretching the budget. You get the standard safety suite, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and the 8-inch touchscreen, making it the best-value choice for most shoppers.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and extra convenience features, including a panoramic sunroof, power driver’s seat, dual automatic climate control, satellite radio, and larger alloy wheels.
• Luxury: This trim is the right pick if comfort matters most. It adds leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, the Bose audio system, and a more premium instrument display.
• N Line: This is the one to buy if you want the Sonata’s sportiest character. It adds the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, sport suspension, wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, tuned exhaust, unique styling, Highway Drive Assist, a larger gauge display, and wireless phone charging.

The safety package is comprehensive across the range, but the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid get extra driver-assistance hardware, including Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 23.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 138 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.48% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,507 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $21,517 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,308 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier to attract interest when you eventually sell. A lower entry point today may also help keep the car competitive against other midsize sedans in the used market.

Because the model still carries a strong value reputation, a well-kept example should remain appealing to shoppers who want a feature-rich sedan without paying new-car money.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five stars for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four stars for front crash protection and five stars for both side crash protection and rollover resistance in the individual tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.

The main caveat is that IIHS crash-avoidance ratings vary by headlight setup: N Line and Ultimate Hybrid models with LED projector headlights earn a Good rating, while other trims with LED reflector headlights receive a Marginal rating.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 23.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong value, quality, and a sporty N Line option.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $18,807 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,517 CAD average.
• It is a credible choice for drivers who want a fun-to-drive sedan with passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around used buy, the 2022 is the better target thanks to its value, safety, and broad trim range. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is worth a look, especially if you want a sedan with a more performance-focused personality.
