What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim gives you a strong value story, but higher trims add meaningful comfort and convenience upgrades. If you want the best balance of equipment and price, the mid-range trims are the ones to compare most closely.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower, while the turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder makes 180 hp and is paired with paddle shifters. The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 290 hp, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and a tuned exhaust.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
• Infotainment: Base versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and six speakers. Higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, and some versions add a 12-speaker Bose audio system and wireless charging.
• Fuel efficiency: NRCan combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 L/100 km on lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km on the N Line. In testing, the Sonata averaged 7.7 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already brings a strong equipment list including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and an 8-inch touchscreen. It is the trim to target if you want the lowest entry price without giving up the core safety and convenience features.
• Sport: This trim adds a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, a power driver’s seat, and larger alloy wheels. It makes sense if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the luxury-oriented trim.
• Luxury: This is the best-value upgrade if you want a more premium cabin, with leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Bose audio system, and a larger instrument display. It is the sweet spot for shoppers who want comfort and features.
• N Line: This is the enthusiast choice, with the 290-hp turbocharged engine, sport suspension, wet dual-clutch transmission, unique styling, and extra tech. Choose it if you want the Sonata’s most distinctive and engaging version.

Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 141 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,264 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $21,277 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,164 CAD.

That decline suggests the Sonata is currently in a softer pricing phase, which can be good news if you are buying now but less favourable if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the market has already adjusted downward, so resale gains may depend more on condition, trim desirability, and mileage than on broad market momentum.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance. It also earns top "Good" ratings in all six IIHS crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Sonata comes standard with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.

One caveat is that IIHS crash-avoidance testing rated the LED projector headlights on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid as "Good", while other trims with LED reflector headlights received a "Marginal" rating.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 stands out for tremendous value, exceptional quality, and the sporty N Line variant.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $18,861 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,277 CAD average.
• It is a credible choice for drivers who want on-pavement performance with passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the stronger all-around value story and a broader used-market selection. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is the better budget play, especially if you want a sedan with a more performance-focused identity.
