What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Essential and Preferred trims are the most basic versions, while the N Line and Kona N add much more distinctive styling and a sportier cabin. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment, especially if you value convenience and comfort features.
• Powertrain: The Essential and Preferred use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the N Line gets a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a seven-speed DCT. The Kona N uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an N eight-speed wet DCT and performance-focused hardware.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.
• Infotainment: The base model gets an 8-inch display with Bluetooth, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trims add SiriusXM, Hyundai BlueLink, and, on the Kona N or N Line with the Ultimate Package, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption for FWD Konas, except the Kona N, is 7.4 L/100 km. AWD versions are rated at 7.9 to 8.2 L/100 km combined, and the Kona N is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, Kona N.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Kona experience with the 8-inch display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the standard safety basics. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is also the trim most likely to feel sparse.
• Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds SiriusXM and Hyundai BlueLink, and it can be paired with the Sun & Leather Package for more comfort and driver-assistance equipment. If you want a more complete daily driver without jumping into the sportier trims, this is the one to focus on.
• N Line: This trim is the sweet spot if you want the strongest mix of style, performance, and value. It adds the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, sportier design details, and access to the Ultimate Package, which brings major tech and convenience upgrades.
• Kona N: This is the full performance model, with the most powerful engine, the most aggressive chassis and braking hardware, and the most advanced infotainment and driver-focused features. Buy this if you want the most exciting Kona, not just the most practical one.

The safety package is limited on the base trim, while higher trims unlock more advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 393 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.88% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,338 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $21,338 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,216 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract attention if they price competitively. A softer market can also mean you may need to be more realistic about resale expectations if you plan to trade in soon.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona earns five-star ratings from NHTSA for overall crash protection, with five-star ratings for front and side crash protection and four-star rollover resistance. The IIHS gave it Good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests, but its child-seat anchors received a Marginal rating, which kept it from earning Top Safety Pick status.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available technologies include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.

The main caveat is the child-seat anchor result, so families should check installation carefully before buying.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 26.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.88% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 refresh adds updated styling, stronger powertrain choices, and more tech and safety equipment.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,025 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,338 CAD average.
• It offers a value-forward setup with plenty of standard features and strong styling.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the more polished Kona with better tech, stronger performance options, and a fresher design. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better budget play and still delivers much of the Kona’s core appeal.
