CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Kona

Summary
With 382 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,355 CAD, 28.0% of 2022 Hyundai Konas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Kona 4.92 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Kona stands out as a more mature take on Hyundai’s subcompact SUV, with a more sophisticated look and added performance. It also marks the model’s first significant refresh in its fifth year on the market, bringing updated exterior styling along with enhanced powertrains and upgraded convenience, connectivity, and safety features.
That combination makes the 2022 Kona appealing to buyers who want a small SUV that feels more polished than basic. Hyundai also added two sporty variants, the N Line and the Kona N, which give shoppers legitimate performance options at a budget price. Owners’ feedback lines up with that character, with praise for the Kona’s fun driving experience, safety features, impressive tech, sleek design, and smooth handling.
There are some trade-offs, though. Some owners feel that features such as power seats and a sunroof should be included at the price point, which suggests the Kona’s value story is strongest when buyers are focused on style, driving enjoyment, and technology rather than a long list of standard comfort equipment.

I thought the 2022 Hyundai Kona was a fantastic little car. It was loaded with all the options you could ask for except navigation. It was peppy and responsive when I stepped on the gas pedal, and it handled perfectly. I really like this car.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.92/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, safety features, impressive tech, sleek design, and smooth handling. That lines up well with the Kona’s refreshed, more polished take on a subcompact SUV, especially if you want something that feels more mature than basic. It also stands out for shoppers who want legitimate performance options at a budget price.
With 26.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because it is described as fun, safe, and impressive on tech. The expert evaluation also highlights a solid, composed driving character and a powertrain that feels durable and well matched to the vehicle’s mission. Hyundai’s warranty coverage adds another layer of confidence for used buyers.
For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about core dependability and more about choosing the right trim and equipment level for your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The refreshed 2022 Kona adds more sophisticated styling, but the biggest feature gaps show up at the lower end of the lineup. The base Essential trim is more basic, while the Preferred adds more convenience and connectivity. If you want the strongest value, the N Line stands out for its sportier look and equipment mix.
- Powertrain: The lower trims use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the N Line upgrades to a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Kona N goes further with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and an N eight-speed wet DCT.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.
- Infotainment: The base trim gets an 8-inch display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add SiriusXM, BlueLink, and, on the Kona N or N Line with the Ultimate Package, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption for FWD Konas except the Kona N is 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres. AWD versions are rated at 7.9 to 8.2 L/100 km combined, depending on the engine, while the Kona N is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined.
Which 2022 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, and Kona N.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, and it gives you the refreshed Kona’s core design, the 8-inch screen, wireless smartphone integration, and the standard safety basics. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the least feature-rich choice.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds SiriusXM and Hyundai BlueLink, while also opening the door to more available equipment. If you want a balanced mix of price and everyday convenience, this is the trim to focus on.
- N Line: This is the sweet spot if you want the Kona to feel more upscale and more fun. It brings the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, sportier styling, and a stronger overall value story than the base trims.
- Kona N: This is the performance-focused choice, with the most powerful engine, the most aggressive hardware, and the most advanced driving features. Buy this one if you want the Kona’s full performance personality rather than just a sporty appearance.
The safety package is somewhat limited on the entry-level model, so it is worth checking which driver-assistance features are included on the specific trim you are considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 393 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.11% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,405 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $21,456 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,693 CAD.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Kona more appealing to used buyers today. For a future seller, it also means you may not see the same pricing strength that existed a year ago unless your vehicle is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. The good news is that the Kona’s broad appeal, strong owner satisfaction, and refreshed feature set should help support demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Kona earns five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for front and side crash protection and four-star rollover resistance. The IIHS gave it the highest-possible Good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests, but the child-seat anchors received a Marginal rating, which kept it from earning Top Safety Pick status.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available technologies include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance. The main caveat is that the lower-anchor child-seat setup is not as user-friendly as it could be.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 refresh brings updated styling, enhanced powertrains, and upgraded convenience, connectivity, and safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,350 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,456 CAD average.
- It offers a value-forward package with plenty of standard features and strong styling.
The bottom line: If you want the more polished Kona with better tech, stronger powertrain choices, and a fresher overall feel, the 2022 is the better pick. If your priority is saving money and you are comfortable giving up some of the refresh-era upgrades, the 2021 remains a sensible lower-cost alternative.
