Why it stands out
The 2019 Hyundai Kona stands out as a subcompact SUV that mixes distinctive styling with a strong equipment list and a choice of powertrains. In its first generation, the Kona offered a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, while higher trims could be had with a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine producing 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. That turbocharged version was paired with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, giving the Kona a more energetic character than many small crossovers in its class.
It was also well equipped for the money. Standard features included 16-inch alloy wheels, a 3.5-inch instrument-cluster screen, air conditioning, heated front seats, keyless entry, a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The 2019 model year also brought the launch of the Kona Electric, which offered strong acceleration and could travel up to 415 kilometres on a single charge. That combination of variety and technology helped make the Kona appealing to buyers who wanted something practical without feeling plain.
There are a few trade-offs, though. The first-generation Kona was cramped inside and short on cargo space, and some drivers also note the lack of a spare tire and adaptive cruise control. Its day 1 but I know I will be in love with this vehicle for a long time. Its got super easy to understand features and such a sleak look and feel. I feel great driving it around. I will say it can feel a little cramped in the back for the taller individual, especially if there are people sat in front of them. However, comfort and style for me are a 10/10 all around
