What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Essential trim gets the refreshed exterior styling and an 8-inch display, but it misses some of the convenience and connected features found higher up the range. The N Line adds sportier styling and more equipment, while the Kona N is the most performance-focused version.
• Powertrain: The lower trims use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the N Line upgrades to a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with a seven-speed DCT. The Kona N uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with an N eight-speed wet DCT and performance hardware.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance are available, and some features are tied to higher trims or packages.
• Infotainment: The base model gets an 8-inch display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add SiriusXM, Hyundai BlueLink, and, on the Kona N or N Line Ultimate Package, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information.
• Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption for FWD Konas, except the Kona N, is 7.4 L/100 km. AWD versions are rated at 7.9 to 8.2 L/100 km, and the Kona N is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, Kona N.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, and it gives you the refreshed styling, the 8-inch display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the core safety basics. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Kona without chasing extras.
• Preferred: This trim adds SiriusXM and Hyundai BlueLink, and it’s the better pick if you want a more complete everyday setup without jumping into the sportier models. It’s the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds useful convenience without pushing the price too far.
• N Line: This is the sweet spot if you want the Kona to feel more upscale and more engaging. It brings the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, sportier styling, and more available tech, and the content suggests it delivers nearly unbeatable bang for the buck.
• Kona N: Choose this if you want the most performance-focused Kona. It adds the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, the N wet DCT, launch control, an electronic limited-slip differential, and other performance hardware that make it the enthusiast’s pick.

The safety package is limited on the entry-level model, so make sure the trim you choose includes the driver-assistance features you want.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 459 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.76% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $21,009 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $21,015 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,815 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Kona has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations. If you buy at today’s average, there may be less room for appreciation later unless market conditions tighten.

The model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal should help support demand over time. Its refreshed styling, good tech, and value-oriented positioning make it easier to market than a more ordinary subcompact SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Kona gets five stars for overall crash protection from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it Good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available technologies include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.

One caveat is that the child-seat anchors received a Marginal rating, which is worth checking if you regularly install child seats.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.76% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 refresh brings updated styling, enhanced powertrains, and upgraded convenience, connectivity, and safety features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,003 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,015 CAD average.
• It offers a value-forward crossover with strong styling and plenty of standard features.

The bottom line: If you want the more polished and better-equipped Kona, the 2022 is the stronger all-around choice. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up the refresh and newer features, the 2021 remains a sensible alternative.
