CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Kona
overall

Summary
With 391 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,512 CAD, 28.6% of 2022 Hyundai Konas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Kona 4.92 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Kona stands out as a more mature take on Hyundai’s subcompact SUV, with a more sophisticated look and added performance. It also marks the model’s first significant refresh in its fifth year on the market, bringing updated exterior styling along with enhanced powertrains and upgraded convenience, connectivity, and safety features.
That combination makes the 2022 Kona appealing to buyers who want a small SUV that feels more polished than basic. Hyundai also added two sporty variants, the N Line and the Kona N, which give shoppers legitimate performance options at a budget price. Owners’ feedback lines up with that character, with praise for the Kona’s fun driving experience, safety features, impressive tech, sleek design, and smooth handling.
There are some trade-offs, though. Some owners feel that features such as power seats and a sunroof should be included at the price point, which suggests the Kona’s value story is strongest when buyers are focused on style, driving enjoyment, and technology rather than a long list of standard comfort equipment.

I thought the 2022 Hyundai Kona was a fantastic little car. It was loaded with all the options you could ask for except navigation. It was peppy and responsive when I stepped on the gas pedal, and it handled perfectly. I really like this car.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Kona earns a 4.92/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, safety features, impressive tech, sleek design, and smooth handling. That lines up well with the Kona’s refreshed, more mature take on a subcompact SUV, especially if you want something that feels more polished than basic. It also stands out for shoppers who want legitimate performance options at a budget price, including sporty variants in the lineup.
With 27.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because it is described as fun, safe, and impressively tech-forward. The expert drive notes also support a dependable feel, with composed handling, stable road manners, and a cabin that is quieter than you might expect at this price point. Hyundai’s warranty coverage adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers.
For a used buyer, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific example has the equipment and condition you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The refreshed 2022 Kona adds a more sophisticated look, but the base trim still leaves you with a fairly limited equipment set compared with higher grades. The N Line and Kona N bring much more distinctive styling and a more athletic feel, while the lower trims are more straightforward and value-focused.
- Powertrain: The lower trims use a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with a CVT, while the N Line upgrades to a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a seven-speed DCT. The Kona N goes further with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine and an eight-speed wet DCT, plus performance-focused hardware.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available upgrades include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.
- Infotainment: The base trim gets an 8-inch display with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Higher trims add SiriusXM, Hyundai BlueLink, and, on the Kona N or N Line with the Ultimate Package, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption for FWD Konas except the Kona N is 7.4 L/100 km. AWD versions are rated at 7.9 to 8.2 L/100 km combined, while the Kona N is rated at 10.4 L/100 km combined.
Which 2022 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, N Line, Kona N.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point if you want the refreshed Kona’s core design, standard wireless smartphone integration, and the basic safety and tech package without stretching the budget. It makes sense if you care most about value and can live without the extra convenience features.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds SiriusXM, Hyundai BlueLink, and more available convenience equipment while staying below the sportier variants. If you want the most balanced mix of features and price, this is the one to focus on.
- N Line: This is the sweet spot if you want the strongest blend of style, tech, and driving enjoyment. It adds the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, sportier design details, and access to the Ultimate Package, making it the most compelling choice for buyers who want more personality without jumping to the top performance model.
- Kona N: Choose this if you want the most powerful and most performance-focused Kona in the lineup. It brings the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, the wet DCT, performance hardware, and the most aggressive styling and cabin treatment.
The safety package is strongest once you move beyond the base setup and into the available driver-assistance upgrades.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Kona?
The current market looks moderate, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 390 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.44% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,405 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Kona's resale value?
The current average of $21,503 CAD sits slightly below last year's $24,559 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Kona has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A softer market now may also make it easier to find a well-equipped example without paying peak pricing. If demand stays steady, the Kona’s broad appeal and refreshed feature set should help support used values better than a more ordinary subcompact SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Kona safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Kona earns five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in front and side crash protection and four-star rollover resistance. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, driver attention warning, and rear occupant alert. Available technologies include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, blind-spot warning with collision avoidance, Highway Drive Assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with collision avoidance.
One caveat is the Kona’s child-seat anchor rating, which was marked Marginal by IIHS, and that kept it from earning Top Safety Pick status.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 refresh brings updated styling, enhanced powertrains, and upgraded convenience, connectivity, and safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,290 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,503 CAD average.
- It offers a value-forward small crossover with plenty of standard features.
The bottom line: If you want the more polished, better-equipped Kona with stronger tech and broader appeal, the 2022 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 remains a sensible alternative, especially if you can find one in good condition with the features you need.
