Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?

Generally — the 4.43/5 user rating and 7.67/10 expert rating point to a truck that lands well with shoppers who want heavy-duty capability without giving up comfort or features. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

The overview also makes clear that this truck is aimed at buyers who need serious work-truck capability but still want off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety in the mix.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a truck that feels smooth, powerful, and comfortable, with many owners praising the feature content and overall value. The same feedback also mentions quality concerns and a frustrating dealer experience, so you should pay close attention to condition and service history when shopping used.

The expert review also describes the Sierra 2500HD as a strong performer with an extremely capable powertrain and an excellent Allison 10-speed automatic transmission when paired with the Duramax diesel. That said, the truck’s heavy-duty hardware and complex equipment mean you should be especially careful about maintenance records, warning lights, and how the truck was used before you buy.

The Duramax diesel also comes with a five-year/160,000-kilometre powertrain/drivetrain limited warranty, which can help reduce long-term ownership risk if you are considering a diesel example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro trim is stripped down for fleet and work use, with cloth seats and basic amenities, while the SLE and SLT add more comfort and mainstream appeal. The AT4 is the off-road-focused choice, and the Denali is the luxury-oriented trim. The AT4 and Denali are crew-cab only, so make sure the body style and equipment match how you plan to use the truck.
• Powertrain: The Sierra 2500HD uses 6.6-litre V8 engines, with a standard gas version and an available Duramax turbodiesel. The diesel brings abundant power and pairs with an excellent Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, but the expert review notes that the truck can feel a bit jittery when unladen and that the diesel’s power can be surprisingly immediate.
• Safety package: The truck is available with automatic emergency braking, forward-collision alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, Safety Alert Seat, and front and rear park assist. Teen Driver is standard. You should also note that some safety and camera features are more valuable on higher trims or better-equipped builds.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7-inch or 8-inch colour touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SLT and above, available on SLE, and not offered on the base Pro trim. Navigation is standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4, while SLE and above add SiriusXM satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar with connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the truck averaged 16.3 L/100 km in combined driving without a trailer. If you plan to tow or haul regularly, expect fuel use to climb.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is offered in 5 trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-focused starting point, with cloth seats and basic amenities rather than luxury touches. It makes sense if you want maximum capability and plan to keep costs down, but it is the least feature-rich choice.
• SLE: This trim adds more creature comforts and is the first step into a more mainstream ownership experience. It is the better-value pick if you want a usable daily truck without jumping all the way to the pricier upper trims.
• SLT: This is the sweet spot for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience while also unlocking wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. If you want a more polished truck without going full luxury, this is the trim to focus on.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented choice, with rugged styling and equipment such as an automatic-locking rear differential, a two-speed transfer case, off-road suspension, skid plates, all-terrain tyres, and a trailer brake controller. It suits you best if you want a heavy-duty truck that can also handle trail use.
• Denali: This is the luxury trim, aimed at buyers who want the most premium cabin and the strongest feature content. It also gets standard navigation and is the best fit if comfort and upscale equipment matter more than price.

For safety equipment, the truck offers a broad list of driver-assistance features, so it is worth prioritising a build that includes the camera and assistance systems you will actually use.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $60,985 CAD sits slightly below last year's $65,895 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favourable for buyers, which can also affect what future sellers can expect. If you buy at today’s lower average, you may have less room for appreciation later, but you are also entering at a more realistic market level.

For resale, the strongest examples will be the ones with desirable trims, good equipment, and clean condition. Trucks with strong owner satisfaction tend to stay in demand, especially when they combine capability with comfort and useful tech.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It is especially appealing if you value comfort, tech, and off-road ability alongside towing and hauling. If you are more price-sensitive, keep shopping the market closely for a well-equipped example with a lower-than-average asking price.
