What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base T5 Momentum is the entry point, while the T6-powered R-Design and Inscription add more equipment and a more upscale feel. The T8 Recharge Inscription Expression, T8 Recharge Inscription, T8 Recharge R-Design, and T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered sit higher in the range, with the Polestar Engineered model bringing the most performance-focused setup.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic, and AWD is standard in Canada. T5 models make 250 horsepower, T6 models make 316 hp, and T8 plug-in hybrid versions add electric assistance for up to 400 hp combined, with the Polestar Engineered model tuned to 415 hp combined.
• Safety package: Volvo’s City Safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, and more. Pilot Assist is available, but not every trim gets every feature.
• Infotainment: The XC60 uses Volvo’s Sensus system with a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are built in, and the interface can feel intuitive once you learn it, though it has a learning curve.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada figures range from 11.1 L/100 km city, 8.3 L/100 km highway, and 9.9 L/100 km combined for the T5 to 9.3 L/100 km combined for the T8 PHEV and 4.0 Le/100 km combined in electric-only mode.

Which 2021 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is offered in 7 trim levels: T5 Momentum, T6 R-Design, T6 Inscription, T8 Recharge Inscription Expression, T8 Recharge Inscription, T8 Recharge R-Design, and T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• T5 Momentum: This is the entry trim and the best starting point if you want the XC60’s core safety, comfort, and design without stretching the budget. It gives you the standard AWD setup and the main Volvo experience at the lowest price.
• T6 R-Design: This trim adds the stronger T6 powertrain and a sportier presentation, making it a good fit if you want more punch and a more expressive look.
• T6 Inscription: Choose this if you want the T6 powertrain with a more upscale, comfort-oriented feel. It suits buyers who value a more premium cabin atmosphere over sport styling.
• T8 Recharge Inscription Expression: This is the plug-in hybrid entry point and the best-value choice if you want electric driving capability without jumping straight to the top of the range.
• T8 Recharge Inscription: This trim builds on the plug-in hybrid setup with a more luxurious specification, making it a strong pick if you want efficiency and premium features together.
• T8 Recharge R-Design: Pick this if you want the plug-in hybrid powertrain with a sportier character and a more performance-minded appearance.
• T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered: This is the most powerful and most specialised version, aimed at buyers who want the strongest performance and the most distinctive hardware in the lineup.

The safety package is a major strength across the range, with Volvo’s extensive standard driver-assistance suite helping the XC60 stand out.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some confidence if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 159 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.90% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,707 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $31,289 CAD sits slightly below last year's $36,767 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you buy now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to normalise. A lower entry price today can help reduce depreciation pressure later, especially if you buy near the bottom of the range.

Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to sell. Well-regarded safety, comfort, and technology features also tend to keep the XC60 appealing to used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the XC60 T5 AWD and XC60 T6 AWD received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, front, side, and curtain airbags with driver-side knee airbag, whiplash protection system in front seats, slippery road/hazard light alert, rear park assist camera, and power child locks on the rear doors.

Pilot Assist is available and combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist to help maintain speed and position. The main caveat is that some of the listed NHTSA ratings apply specifically to the T5 AWD and T6 AWD versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines luxury-level appointments, exceptional safety features, and a lusty powertrain.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $35,206 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $31,289 CAD average.
• It adds new powertrains and an Android-based infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and the model still delivers strong safety, comfort, and technology. If you are willing to spend more for newer powertrains and a refreshed infotainment experience, the 2022 is the better upgrade path.
