What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is defined by clean lines, authentic materials, and a serene aura, while higher trims can add larger alloy wheels and more upscale presentation. Base-trim equipment gaps matter if you want the most premium feel.
• Powertrain: You get a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre gasoline engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard in Canada. T5 models make 250 horsepower, while T6 and T8 versions add more power and, in T8 form, plug-in hybrid capability.
• Safety package: Volvo’s standard safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, and more. Pilot Assist is available, and some features are not reserved for higher trims.
• Infotainment: The XC60 uses Volvo’s Sensus system with a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are built in, but the system has a learning curve and some shoppers may miss wireless smartphone integration.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada figures range from 11.1 L/100 km city and 8.3 L/100 km highway for the T5 to 9.3 L/100 km combined for the T8 PHEV, with 4.0 Le/100 km combined in electric-only mode.

Which 2021 Volvo XC60 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 is offered in 6 trim levels: T5 Momentum, T6 R-Design, T6 Inscription, T8 eAWD Inscription Expression, T8 eAWD Inscription, T8 eAWD R-Design, and T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered.

Here's the short version:

• T5 Momentum: This is the entry point and the best-value choice if you want the XC60’s core luxury, safety, and standard all-wheel drive without stretching the budget.
• T6 R-Design: This trim adds the stronger T6 powertrain and a sportier presentation, making it a good fit if you want more performance and a more expressive look.
• T6 Inscription: Choose this if you want a more upscale, comfort-focused feel with the T6 engine and a more premium cabin character.
• T8 eAWD Inscription Expression: This is the plug-in hybrid starting point, giving you electric-only driving capability and strong efficiency if you can charge regularly.
• T8 eAWD Inscription: A better-equipped plug-in hybrid choice if you want the T8 powertrain with a more premium feature set.
• T8 eAWD R-Design: Pick this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup with a sportier appearance and a more performance-oriented vibe.
• T8 eAWD Polestar Engineered: This is the top performance-focused trim, with the most potent tune in the lineup and distinctive details.

Volvo’s standard safety equipment is extensive across the range, so even lower trims give you a strong safety foundation.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC60?

The market looks moderately favourable if you’re a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 140 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.07% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $29,583 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC60's resale value?

The current average of $29,674 CAD sits slightly below last year's $37,123 CAD.

That drop suggests the XC60 has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice, since the market has already adjusted downward.

Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC60 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the XC60 T5 AWD and XC60 T6 AWD received five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance, low- and high-speed collision mitigation, vehicle/cyclist/large animal detection, driver alert control, run-off road protection, run-off road mitigation, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping aid, oncoming mitigation, front, side, and curtain airbags with driver-side knee airbag, whiplash protection system in front seats, slippery road/hazard light alert, rear park assist camera, and power child locks on the rear doors.

Pilot Assist is available and combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist to help maintain speed and position. Volvo also governs the XC60 to a top speed of 180 kilometres per hour.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC60 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 20.07% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines luxury-level appointments, cool Scandinavian style, exceptional safety features, and a lusty powertrain.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $34,334 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $29,674 CAD average.
• It adds new mild-hybrid powertrains and Android-based infotainment.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and inventory is available. If you’re willing to spend more for newer tech and updated powertrains, the 2022 is the better alternative.
