CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Sienna
overall

Summary
With 59 currently listed for sale and an average price of $37,620 CAD, 30.5% of 2021 Toyota Sienna listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Sienna 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new style and, for the first time, a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain. That hybrid setup is standard equipment, which makes the 2021 Sienna unusual among minivans and gives it a clear efficiency-focused identity. It also rides on Toyota’s New Global Architecture TNGA-K platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models, which helps define it as a more modern and thoroughly reworked version of Toyota’s family hauler.
For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: the 2021 Toyota Sienna is aimed at families who want a roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. The available AWD and hybrid combination is especially attractive for drivers who want extra confidence for road trips and everyday use. The trade-offs are worth noting, though, as some drivers have raised concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, and missing features such as a spare tyre and some connectivity options.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.33/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating, which points to a well-liked minivan with broad appeal. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.
Drivers repeatedly praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. The AWD and hybrid combination also comes up often as a strong fit for road trips and everyday family use. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Sienna’s family-hauler mission: you get space, efficiency, and a modern redesign that aims to make minivan life easier.
23.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for its roomy cabin, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling. That kind of feedback suggests you can count on it for family duty and longer trips, especially if efficiency matters to you. The expert assessment also describes the engine, motor, and battery combination as proven, which supports the idea that the hybrid setup is built around established hardware.
Toyota’s warranty coverage also helps reduce ownership anxiety, especially for hybrid-specific components. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core hybrid system and more about whether the individual vehicle has been maintained well and avoided wear-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE, XLE, XSE, and Limited each bring different equipment levels, with the LE using 17-inch wheels and a six-speaker stereo, while higher trims add larger wheels, more connectivity, and more premium audio and convenience features. The LE also stands out because it can include a spare tyre, which is not mentioned as standard elsewhere.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder hybrid setup with two electric motors making 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available across the range through a separate rear electric motor.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on all trim levels and includes full-speed range dynamic radar adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with bicyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring, the Star Safety System, 10 airbags, and a tyre pressure monitoring system are also standard.
- Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and USB ports throughout the cabin. Wireless charging is not standard across the range, and the rear-seat entertainment system is reserved for higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 6.6 L/100 km in city driving, 6.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 6.5 combined. AWD models are rated at 6.8 city, 6.6 highway, and 6.7 combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value-focused choice if you want the essentials, including the standard hybrid powertrain, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a nine-inch touchscreen, and the lowest entry price. It also keeps the six-speaker stereo and is the trim to watch if you want the available spare tyre.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more convenience and connectivity, including Safety Connect, Remote Connect, and Smart Key System, while staying below the sportier and more expensive trims.
- XSE: This trim adds a more upscale and tech-forward feel, with available Technology Package content, Qi-compatible charging, and access to the rear-seat entertainment system. It suits you if you want a more feature-rich family hauler without jumping to Limited.
- Limited: This is the most premium choice, with standard Qi-compatible charging, a 1500-watt inverter, a 7-inch driver display, premium JBL audio, and standard rear-seat entertainment. It’s the right pick if you want the most comfort and tech in one package.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and blind spot monitoring are standard across all trim levels.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 23.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 125 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.31% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $41,550 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $41,564 CAD sits slightly below last year's $46,341 CAD.
That softer pricing can be good news if you’re buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if values continue to ease. A model that has already moved down from its prior-year average can be harder to resell at a premium unless it is especially well equipped or exceptionally clean. On the other hand, the Sienna’s strong owner satisfaction and family-friendly reputation should help support demand over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna gets a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though it gets four-star ratings for overall front and rollover resistance.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on all trim levels and includes full-speed range dynamic radar adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with bicyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind spot monitoring, the Star Safety System, 10 airbags, LATCH anchors, and a tyre pressure monitoring system are also standard.
One useful caveat is that the spare tyre is not broadly standard across the range, with the LE grade specifically noted as the place buyers can still find one.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 23.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings the first-year redesign with a standard hybrid powertrain and a more modern family-hauler formula.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $33,651 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $41,564 CAD average.
- It offers all-wheel drive and strong practicality in a more traditional Sienna package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $47,153 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $41,564 CAD average.
- It carries the redesigned hybrid formula forward unchanged.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Sienna with the hybrid-only identity and strong feature set, the 2021 is the main target. If price matters most, the 2020 is the cheaper route, while the 2022 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer model year and are comfortable paying more.
