Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a 4.62/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, smooth ride, impressive power, off-road capability, and luxury feel. The overview also points to a familiar two-row SUV formula, which suits you if you want the older Grand Cherokee character rather than the newer, larger interpretation of the name.

Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee reliable?

The expert commentary reinforces that sense of durability and confidence by describing it as a capable all-arounder with the tools you need for adventure. Jeep also notes regular rebates and incentives, which can help offset ownership costs when you buy.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear and dated tech can matter more than the core mechanical appeal.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from the affordable Laredo and Limited to the upscale Overland and Summit, with Trailhawk for serious off-roading and SRT and Trackhawk for high-performance driving. The base trims are the ones most likely to leave you wanting more premium equipment, while Summit brings the luxury feel that helps define the model.
• Powertrain: You get a standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, plus an optional 5.7-litre Hemi V8 with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. The V6 is the sensible choice, while the V8 adds stronger towing and more character but uses more fuel.
• Safety package: Jeep’s ProTech II Package includes adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Some trims may not include the full suite.
• Infotainment: The Uconnect 4C with Nav system uses a responsive touchscreen and includes navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. It also supports SiriusXM services and remote features through SiriusXM Guardian.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the V8 should return no better than 14.1 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and the test vehicle recorded 12.9 L/100 km on a mixed route.

Which 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee trim should I buy?

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in 8 trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Altitude, 80th Anniversary Edition, Overland, Summit, Trailhawk, and Trackhawk.

Here's the short version:

• Laredo: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Grand Cherokee experience at the lowest starting point. It gives you the core SUV formula, but you should expect fewer luxury touches than the higher trims.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more upscale feel without pushing you into the expensive upper end of the range. It suits you if you want a balanced mix of comfort, equipment, and price.
• Altitude: This is a style-focused step up that broadens the lineup for 2021. It is a good fit if you want a more distinctive look without jumping all the way to the luxury trims.
• 80th Anniversary Edition: This is another 2021 addition that gives you a commemorative flavour and extra appeal if you want something a little more special than the standard trims.
• Overland: This is where the Grand Cherokee starts leaning harder into premium comfort and upscale presentation. Choose it if you want a more luxurious daily driver.
• Summit: This is the trim that best showcases the Grand Cherokee’s luxury side, with premium materials, a more polished cabin, and the strongest sense of refinement.
• Trailhawk: This is the one to buy if off-road use matters most. It is the serious adventure trim in the lineup.
• Trackhawk: This is the high-performance choice, aimed at buyers who want the most aggressive driving character in the range.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that the full ProTech II Package appears on higher-spec examples, so verify the exact equipment on any used listing.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 554 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.10% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $29,478 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee's resale value?

The current average of $29,478 CAD sits slightly below last year's $33,922 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the model easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at the current average or below, you reduce the risk of overpaying relative to recent market history.

For a future seller, the key question is whether the Grand Cherokee’s strong brand appeal and capability can offset its age and fuel-economy drawbacks. Well-equipped examples with desirable trims and strong condition should hold buyer interest better than plain or heavily worn ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee safe?

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA in 4WD form, while 2WD versions drop to four-star overall because of a three-star rollover resistance rating. It also earns a Marginal driver rating and a Poor front-passenger rating in IIHS small-overlap frontal testing, and its headlights rate Poor unless you upgrade to the high-intensity discharge units with automatic high-beam assist.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

Jeep’s ProTech II Package adds adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. The Summit test vehicle had the full suite, but availability depends on trim.

The main safety caveat is the weak IIHS crash performance, which is the biggest reason to think carefully before buying this model year.

Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It is the last version of the familiar two-row Grand Cherokee before the redesign arrives.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $25,718 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $29,478 CAD average.
• It offers a familiar formula with strong off-road capability and a long-running design.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $33,822 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $29,478 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned package with a major upgrade in technology and sophistication.

The bottom line: If you want the classic two-row Grand Cherokee formula and can live with older tech and weaker safety results, the 2021 is the right pick. If price matters most, the 2020 is the value play; if you want the newer, more advanced direction for the nameplate, the 2022 is the better long-term target.
