CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Palisade
overall

Summary
With 69 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,701 CAD, 31.9% of 2021 Hyundai Palisade listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Palisade 4.64 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade stands out as a midsize, three-row SUV that combines roominess, comfort, safety, technology, and style in a package that is widely regarded as one of the strongest choices in its class. It is also described as affordable and enjoyable to drive, which helps broaden its appeal beyond buyers who simply want maximum passenger space. The overall impression is of a vehicle that aims to deliver a near-luxury experience without losing the practicality expected from a family SUV.
For 2021, the Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level. The lineup includes Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and the new Ultimate Calligraphy trim, with Canadian pricing ranging from $41,399 to $54,899 before the $1,925 destination charge. That combination of added equipment and a broader trim range gives shoppers more choice, while the top-end Ultimate Calligraphy version shows how far the Palisade can lean into a more upscale feel.
Owner feedback reinforces the Palisade’s strengths, especially its spacious interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, elegant design, and high-tech capabilities. At the same time, some drivers have raised concerns about the price being on the high side, minor cabin noise at high speeds, and interior materials that can feel cheap for the price point.

Reviewed a 2021 Hyundai Limited FWD on Apr 19, 2025
I purchased my 2021 Hyundai Palisade during the summer of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the shortage of vehicles, it’s the first vehicle that I NEVER test drove before I purchased it. Fortunately, my youngest brother had one that was similar and he had given me raving reviews about it. So, I wasn’t too concerned about its handling or drivability. During my ownership of the Palisade, it drove and handled superbly well in all road conditions. It didn’t matter what the road conditions were, the Palisade was always well grounded and with good tires, not even heavily wet roads were able to throw it off course. I would travel once or twice a year to Colorado Springs, Co., to visit my daughter and her family and the trips were always smooth and comfortable. Driving the Palisade was an absolute pleasure to do. Now, for the reasons why I traded in the Palisade and purchased a 2025 Ram 1500 instead. The Limited model comes with a sunroof and little did I know but Hyundai uses plastic for the sunroof rail system that allows the sunroof to slide back and forth. Well, I wasn’t a big user of the sunroof and that apparently was my mistake. You see, this last fall, October, 2024, I believe, my sunroof rail system broke. Yes, it flat broke because as I was told, I didn’t use it enough. It was explained to me that since the parts are plastic and that there’s grease along the rail system, I needed to use the sunroof more frequently in order to keep those parts well lubricated by using the sunroof regularly. Since, I didn’t use the sunroof regularly, I may have used it 12 times in my 4 years of owning it, that’s what lead to the rail system being locked up and causing it to break. It makes sense but WOW is that crazy. I was also told that the repair would cost me over $7K!!! That wasn’t going to happen, so with my girlfriend’s help, we taped and sealed the sunroof using some gorilla tape and there were no leaks. It was during this same time that the sunroof broke, I was informed by the Hyundai dealer, following an oil change, that another PLASTIC part had broken. This time it was the PLASTIC oil filter housing unit. Apparently, it had possibly been broken when someone changed the oil filter during an oil change. I can’t prove that but it’s the most logical explanation. Since the sunroof wasn’t leaking and after I found a local mechanic shop to replace the oil filter housing unit, the Hyundai dealer wanted way too much money for the repair, I was content to go on and keep my Hyundai Palisade, which had 108K miles on it, and run off into the sunset with it. Well, not so quick, because I began to notice that there was a possible problem that was developing with the transmission. I never took to a mechanic or service center to be looked at but I believe that the transmission was beginning to slip. There were rare occasions, one or twice a week, where the transmission seemed to make a different sound around 20-30 mph. It wasn’t every day but I did notice it. Well, that was the last straw. There may not have been anything wrong with the transmission at all but I wasn’t going to keep it and find out. Therefore, I decided to trade it in and I purchased the 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. My time with the Palisade was great and I enjoyed driving it but the reliability and quality of the vehicle was deeply impacted by plastic parts in the wrong locations. Those plastic parts and reliability issues are the direct reasons why I traded in the Palisade once I noticed the possible transmission issue. It was almost like the vehicle was built to last 100K miles, due to its own powertrain warranty and once that was done, so was the vehicle. It’s only due to the fun and pleasure of owning and driving the Palisade for the first problem free 100K miles that I’m even giving the vehicle 3 out of 5 stars. When I purchased the Palisade, I truly thought I had gotten a well equipped vehicle for a bargain. Unfortunately, in the long run, despite the Palisade being well equipped, it wasn’t reliable for the long term and thus, I probably won’t buy another Hyundai ever again. Now, Hyundai and Chevy are the two manufacturers that I will have to avoid. My 1991 Chevy 1500 had to have its transmission rebuilt at only 109K miles nearly 20 years ago and I haven’t purchased a Chevy or GMC vehicle since then. I like dependable and reliable vehicles that last without major repairs being needed around 100K miles. That’s not asking a lot and I don’t see why manufacturers don’t build vehicles that last at least until 150K miles before major repairs are needed, when owners are keeping up with routine maintenance, like myself.

The best features you can get for the year. Best value for $$ other than a Kia Sorrento sx imo. Just be careful of the warranty expiring at a critical time between 160000km and 180000km as these are the times where a lot could break down all at once.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Palisade earns a 4.64/5 user rating and a 9/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
You get a spacious interior, abundant features, and a comfortable ride, along with an elegant design and high-tech capabilities. It also fits well if you want a family-friendly three-row SUV that feels more upscale than its price suggests.
With 27.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to find value in the market.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise the Palisade for being spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, and many describe it as a vehicle they would happily count on for family use. The expert review also highlights its quiet, predictable driving character and its polished overall execution.
Hyundai’s five-year, 100,000 km warranty coverage and five-year, unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance plan add peace of mind for used buyers. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about core dependability and more about whether the higher trim content and premium feel justify the asking price.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Ultimate Calligraphy stands apart with a different grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, unique 20-inch alloy wheels, upgraded interior detailing, and a simulated suede headliner. It also feels notably more upscale inside, while standard LED headlights were added for models that did not have them last year.
- Powertrain: Every Palisade uses a 3.8-litre V6 with 291 horsepower, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive in Canada. It is tuned for calm, confident everyday driving rather than outright sportiness.
- Safety package: Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, and a rear occupant alert system. Most trims add active blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, Safe Exit Assist, and most trims use a more sophisticated ultrasonic rear occupant alert system. Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor.
- Infotainment: The Palisade offers either an 8-inch or 10.25-inch touchscreen. Only the 8-inch system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the larger screen still needs a wired connection. The Ultimate Calligraphy adds SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, navigation, Blue Link connected services, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada predicts 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and the test vehicle matched that figure.
Which 2021 Hyundai Palisade trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core Palisade experience and the standard safety equipment. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and do not need the richer cabin upgrades.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and convenience without pushing too far up the price ladder. If you want the sweet spot between equipment and cost, start here.
- Luxury: This trim is the better choice if you want a more premium feel and the added blind-spot camera system. It suits you if you value extra tech and a more upscale daily driving experience.
- Ultimate Calligraphy: This is the most luxurious version, with the most distinctive styling and the richest cabin materials. Choose it if you want the Palisade to feel as close as possible to a luxury SUV.
Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy trims also add the Blind View Monitor.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 263 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 20.27% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $27,305 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade's resale value?
The current average of $27,431 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,403 CAD.
That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside for a future seller. If you plan to resell later, the current pricing trend means you should be realistic about depreciation from today’s level. Strong equipment, family appeal, and broad demand can still support values, but the market is clearly softer than it was a year ago.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade earns top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, and a rear occupant alert system. Most trims add active blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, Safe Exit Assist, and an ultrasonic rear occupant alert system, while Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor.
Highway Driving Assist is a standout feature, but it is not designed for hands-free driving. Keep your hands on the wheel and let it handle distance, speed, and lane maintenance.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Palisade or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 20.27% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 adds more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $32,745 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $27,431 CAD average.
- It adds direct gasoline injection and keeps standard all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2021 is the smarter starting point because it combines strong satisfaction, a softer market, and a richer equipment story than the earlier model year. If you are willing to spend more for a newer example, the 2022 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritise its updated powertrain details.
