What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Honda Pilot?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pilot comes in LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Touring, and Black Edition trims. The base trims are more basic, while higher trims add leather, navigation, and more premium convenience features. The Black Edition is the most fully loaded version and adds exclusive blacked-out styling and unique interior details.
• Powertrain: Every Pilot uses a 3.5-litre V6 with 280 horsepower and a nine-speed automatic. It delivers smooth, refined power and strong everyday acceleration, while the torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system and traction modes help in slippery conditions.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning start with the Touring trim.
• Infotainment: Most models get an 8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text-messaging support, satellite radio, and HondaLink. Wireless phone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a premium audio system, and rear-seat entertainment are reserved for higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada says the Pilot should use 11.0 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 10.9 L/100 km on the test loop.

Which 2021 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?

The 2021 Honda Pilot is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Touring, and Black Edition.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point if you want the Pilot’s core space, V6 power, and standard safety tech without paying for extras. It makes sense if you care most about utility and value.
• EX: This trim adds more everyday convenience while staying close to the lower end of the range. It is a sensible choice if you want a better-equipped Pilot without stretching too far.
• EX-L Navi: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds leather and built-in navigation while staying below the more expensive Touring. It suits you if you want a more premium feel without going all the way to the top.
• Touring: This trim adds wireless phone charging, HondaLink subscription services, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a 10-speaker premium audio system, rear-seat entertainment, a 115-volt power outlet, an HDMI port, and Cabin Talk. It is the right pick if you regularly carry passengers and want the most family-friendly tech.
• Black Edition: This is the fully loaded choice, with exclusive black leather upholstery, red contrast stitching, red ambient lighting, and blacked-out styling. It suits you if you want the most distinctive and upscale Pilot.

Starting with the Touring trim, the Pilot also adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Honda Pilot?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 246 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.99% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $31,932 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Honda Pilot's resale value?

The current average of $31,949 CAD sits slightly below last year's $37,584 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Pilot has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may not see the same pricing strength that existed a year ago. Even so, the Pilot’s reputation for reliability, practicality, and family appeal should continue to support resale interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Honda Pilot safe?

The 2021 Honda Pilot earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA despite four-star ratings for front-passenger protection in a frontal impact. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it good ratings except for an acceptable score for front passenger small overlap frontal-impact protection, and the standard headlights also earn an acceptable rating while higher-trim headlights earn a good rating.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist. Starting with the Touring trim, you also get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning. The system works, but it is not especially smooth, and the lane-departure warning’s steering-wheel wobble can feel a bit intrusive.

Should I buy a 2021 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.99% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 stands out for its strong mix of utility, comfort, and driving enjoyment.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $29,543 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $31,949 CAD average.
• It offers lots of cargo space and an adult-friendly third row.

The bottom line: Choose the 2021 if you want the stronger overall package and are comfortable paying a bit more for a well-liked, well-rounded SUV. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play.
