Is the 2021 Honda CR-V a good car?

Is the 2021 Honda CR-V reliable?

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is not outright fragility, but whether a given example has been maintained well enough to preserve that trouble-free reputation.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Honda CR-V?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LX is the least equipped, and the biggest gap is that blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard there. Higher trims add more upscale cabin materials and extra convenience features, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the best value.
• Powertrain: Every trim uses the same 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder with 190 horsepower and a CVT. It is tuned for smooth, predictable acceleration rather than excitement, so you should focus on whether the drivetrain feels responsive enough for your driving.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard across the range and includes a multi-angle rearview camera, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high-beam headlamps. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard on the LX.
• Infotainment: Every trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SMS text messaging functions. Higher trims add features such as SiriusXM, HD radio, navigation, and a wireless phone charger, while the base setup is simpler.
• Fuel efficiency: The CR-V is rated as low as 8.3 L/100 km city, 7.0 L/100 km highway, and 7.7 L/100 km combined in FWD form. AWD models are rated at 8.7 L/100 km city, 7.4 L/100 km highway, and 8.1 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Honda CR-V trim should I buy?

The 2021 Honda CR-V is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the value-focused starting point, but it is the least equipped trim and misses blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It makes sense if you want the CR-V’s core safety and practicality at the lowest entry point.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim because it adds blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert while keeping the CR-V’s standard safety suite intact. It is the smart pick if you want the most important convenience and safety upgrade without moving too far up the price ladder.
• EX: This trim adds more comfort and tech content, including the broader feature set that starts to make the cabin feel more upscale. It suits you if you want a more complete daily driver without going all the way to the top trims.
• EX-L: This is the better choice if you want a more premium-feeling interior and stronger audio and connectivity features. It is a good fit for shoppers who spend a lot of time in the vehicle and want a more polished experience.
• Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, with the strongest tech and convenience content, including navigation and a wireless phone charger. Choose it if you want the most feature-rich CR-V and are willing to pay for it.

Honda Sensing is standard on every trim, and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert becomes standard starting with the Sport.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Honda CR-V?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without waiting for a dramatic bargain.

• Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 725 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.65% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $25,869 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Honda CR-V's resale value?

The current average of $25,870 CAD sits slightly below last year's $29,616 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. If you buy well today, you may have less downside risk than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. Strong demand and broad shopper appeal should still help support resale interest over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Honda CR-V safe?

The 2021 Honda CR-V earned both a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. It also received Good in the original side crash test and Acceptable for LATCH ease of use.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Honda Sensing is standard on every trim and includes a multi-angle rearview camera, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and auto high-beam headlamps. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is not standard on the LX, but it becomes standard on the Sport and stays standard above that.

The main caveat is that it did not reach Top Safety Pick+ because of lower headlight scores and the updated side crash test.

Should I buy a 2021 Honda CR-V or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines strong safety awards with broad mainstream appeal.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $25,240 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $25,870 CAD average.
• It is a familiar, comfortable, and practical crossover with strong handling.

The bottom line: The 2021 is the better all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of safety, owner satisfaction, and current market availability. If your priority is saving a bit more upfront, the 2020 is the sensible lower-cost alternative.

How does the 2021 Honda CR-V compare to the 2021 Toyota RAV4?
