CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Forester
Summary
With 197 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,584 CAD, 32.5% of 2020 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Forester 4.83 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that puts safety, all-weather traction, and everyday usability first. It sits within the fifth generation, which debuted for the 2019 model year with a renewed focus on comfort, safety and efficiency. For this model year, Subaru’s EyeSight system was standard across the range and included adaptive cruise control, Pre-Collision Braking, lane departure and sway warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert on all models. It also came with symmetrical all-wheel drive as standard, along with an updated 2.5-litre boxer engine rated at 182 hp and 176 lb-ft, paired with a CVT. Those ingredients make the 2020 Forester appealing to buyers who want a dependable, easy-to-live-with SUV that feels especially well suited to poor weather and daily commuting.
The 2020 Forester also benefits from the fifth generation’s broader improvements in ride, stability, handling, and crash protection, thanks to the Subaru Global Platform. Subaru’s larger windows help visibility, and the model’s more modern design keeps the Forester’s familiar compact-SUV shape while making it feel more refined. Inside, available features included an eight-inch touchscreen on higher trims, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic power moonroof, and, on the Limited trim, perforated leather upholstery, a power rear gate, and upgraded LED headlights. The top-spec Premier model added Subaru’s DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System and a Harman Kardon sound system. On the downside, the CVT can feel sluggish, and some owners have noted road noise and an interior that feels a bit narrower than expected.

How much does the 2020 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,584 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $22,582 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $26,645 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,645 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −15.24% |
Prices have softened 15.24% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 206 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Forester earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its safety features, smooth driving experience, and interior design, and many say it offers strong value compared with rivals. That fits especially well if you want a practical compact SUV for daily commuting and poor-weather driving. With 33.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a solid chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2020 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a reliable, dependable ownership experience, with drivers highlighting how easy it is to live with over time. The recurring praise for safety and everyday usability suggests this is the kind of SUV many owners feel comfortable counting on. For used buyers, that usually means lower worry about day-to-day ownership risk, especially if the vehicle has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 206 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.24% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $22,582 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $22,584 CAD sits slightly below last year's $26,645 CAD.
That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you buy at today's average, you may have less room for appreciation in the near term, so condition and mileage will matter a lot when it comes time to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 15.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2020 Forester is a strong choice if you want a practical, safety-focused compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive and broad owner approval. If your priority is value, the 2020 makes sense because pricing has eased and deal availability is decent. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs the 2020’s stronger satisfaction signal.
