CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 163 currently listed for sale near Thornhill, ON and an average price of $22,337 CAD, 33.7% of 2020 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by bringing a more premium feel to the compact SUV class. Mazda’s approach for this model year is to combine the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology more often associated with luxury vehicles, and that gives the CX-5 a distinctive place in a crowded market. It is also Mazda’s most popular vehicle, which suggests that its blend of style and substance resonates with buyers.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 especially appealing is its premium interior materials, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character. Those strengths help it feel more polished than many shoppers might expect from a mainstream SUV. At the same time, its outdated technology is a notable drawback, so buyers drawn to the CX-5 are likely prioritising refinement and driving enjoyment over the latest infotainment features.
Owner feedback broadly reinforces that impression, with praise for the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the ample power on the highway. Some owners did note limited cargo space and rear legroom, along with a wish for more engine power, so the CX-5’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who value comfort, quality, and road manners over outright practicality.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

| Year-Round High | $25,888 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,565 CAD |

Prices have softened 7.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 398 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and ample power on the highway. They also highlight the luxurious feel and safety features, which fits a model that aims to bring a more premium experience to the compact SUV class.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and some practical compromises, including limited cargo space and rear legroom. That means you should view it as a strong fit if you value refinement, comfort, and driving enjoyment more than the latest infotainment features or maximum utility.
With its premium feel and mainstream-brand value, it suits you best if you want a compact SUV that feels more upscale than its price suggests. The market also shows 31.7% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers expressing confidence in the CX-5 over the long term. That kind of feedback matters if you want a used SUV you can count on day to day.
The expert evaluation also reinforces that impression by describing Mazda’s products as well engineered and good value for the money. If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether the CX-5’s older technology and packaging still suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature are the trim levels to compare. The GX is the most basic version, while higher trims add more premium materials and equipment. The Signature stands out with premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood, and a black headliner, but the cabin’s brown leather can blend into the dark interior more than you might expect.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. GT Turbo and Signature use a turbocharged version that delivers 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel. AWD is standard on the upper trims in Canada, and the turbo model comes only with AWD.
- Safety package: The standard suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GS adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
- Infotainment: GX gets a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, HD Radio, text messaging support, integrated internet radio apps, E911 emergency notification, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GT adds SiriusXM, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and navigation, while GT Turbo adds an 8-inch touchscreen. Signature adds a surround-view camera system.
- Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined with AWD and 8.8 L/100 km combined with FWD. The turbocharged engine is rated at 9.8 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- GX: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the basic safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you give up several convenience and driver-assistance upgrades.
- GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. If safety equipment matters most, this is the trim to focus on.
- GT: This is the trim to consider if you want a more premium daily experience, with SiriusXM, a Bose audio system, navigation, and adaptive headlights. It is the sweet spot if you want more comfort and tech without jumping to the turbo models.
- GT Turbo: Choose this if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and the extra punch that comes with it. It suits you best if highway passing power matters and you are willing to accept higher fuel consumption.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with premium Nappa leather, real wood, a black headliner, and a surround-view camera system. It is the right pick if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience and are comfortable paying for it.
The safety package starts with the standard ADAS suite and expands meaningfully at GS, so that trim deserves close attention if you want the best balance of value and protection.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 398 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.81% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,054 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $23,569 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,565 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has become a bit more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you may need to price competitively if you want to move the vehicle quickly.
Even so, the model’s premium feel, strong owner satisfaction, and broad appeal should help support resale interest. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety package includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GS adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist, while adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
That combination of standard equipment and strong crash-test results makes the CX-5 an easy SUV to recommend if safety is high on your list. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines premium feel with strong safety and a more upscale cabin than many rivals.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,959 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,569 CAD average.
- Mazda enhanced the tech and added a Canadian Kuro Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and the core strengths remain intact. If you are willing to pay more for updated technology and a newer model year, the 2021 is the better path.
