CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Mazda CX-5

Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Mazda CX-5 4.8 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 stands out because it blends compact-SUV practicality with a more polished, driver-focused character than many rivals. Mazda’s second-generation CX-5 was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year, and it brought a sleeker exterior, a more stylish cabin, and a near-premium feel that helped the model build on the strengths of the first-generation version. It also kept the brand’s reputation for sharp handling, which is a major part of the CX-5’s appeal for buyers who want an SUV that feels more engaging on the road.
For 2019, the CX-5’s core powertrain was the 2.5-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv engine, paired with either a six-speed manual transmission, which was standard in Canada until 2019, or a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive was standard, while Mazda’s i-Activ AWD was still optional for this model year. The GX trim included 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, air conditioning, keyless entry, push-button start, and a Mazda Connect infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen display and SMS text delivery function. That equipment list, along with the CX-5’s strong design and premium ambience, helps explain why it has long been seen as a well-equipped choice.
There are a few limitations to keep in mind. The CX-5 is not as practical as some rivals, and its infotainment systems are slightly outdated. Some owners also wished for more power from the base engine and noted the absence of certain high-end features. Even so, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 remains appealing because it offers a refined interior, good value, and the kind of handling that makes it feel more special than many mainstream compact SUVs.

Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its value, luxury feel, great handling, and impressive fuel efficiency. You also see repeated appreciation for the interior quality and safety features, which fits a compact SUV that aims to feel more polished than many rivals. Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centred on value, fuel efficiency, and the kind of quality that helps you feel confident keeping the vehicle for the long term. That said, used buyers should still check maintenance records and inspect wear items carefully, since any older SUV can carry age-related ownership risk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?

What is the 2019 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $21,537 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,087 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:

- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,850 CAD, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $21,537 CAD average.
- It leans more into a premium feel with a more upscale presentation.
The bottom line:
The 2019 is the better value play if you want the CX-5’s polished driving feel and strong owner approval at a lower average price. If you can stretch your budget and want a newer model with a more premium-leaning presentation, the 2020 is the secondary path to consider.
