CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 101 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,803 CAD, 27.7% of 2020 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Hyundai Sonata 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata stands out as the start of Hyundai’s eighth generation, and it marked a dramatic shift in the car’s design. Its curvaceous, muscular styling, low-slung fastback shape, and lighting signatures that fade into the hood give it a far more distinctive look than the Sonata had worn before. It also feels more upscale than its price suggests, with a pretty interior, lots of tech and safety features, and ample room in the back and trunk.
For 2020, the Sonata offered gas and hybrid models, and all eighth-generation versions were front-wheel drive. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder made 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder made 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The N Line’s 2.5-litre turbo four produced 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, making it the quickest gas-only version mentioned here. The hybrid was the most efficient, rated at 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres combined, while most gas-only Sonatas ranged between 7.7 and 8.8 L/100 km combined.
The 2020 Sonata also brought a strong standard equipment list, including an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear seat reminders, driver-attention warnings, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Heated front seats and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel were standard as well. Its main drawbacks are that it is not as sporty to drive as it looks, and it does not offer all-wheel drive. Still, for buyers who want a well-equipped, comfortable midsize sedan with standout styling, the 2020 Sonata is an appealing choice.

This is my second Sonata. The first one was a 2008 at about the same trim level. I had upgraded the radio to an android tablet-based version with many of the features found in the newer model cars. The newer Sonata is great, and any comments are very minor. 1. I am still getting used to the push-button transmission and performance selection between the seats. I just leave it in normal. 2. Having the brake set with the park button is nice. I still look to see if I have to release it. 3. The larger wheels with thinner tires look good but may give a slightly rougher ride. 4. I have the base radio. It sounds great, but you need to couple it with a phone to get GPS and there is no built-in CD player. Yeah, I am an old guy. 5. I have read that the acceleration is not as good as some competitors. It is great for me and feels quicker than my much-loved 2008. 6. You might want to upgrade the Factory alarm. All in all, no buyers remorse here.

For a 1.6L it has a lot of pick up. You can really feel that turbo kick in! Inside, this thing is like a luxury car... its beautiful. Minimalism on the dash is nice and clean. It also explains all the tech on the screen which is very helpful. Overall probably the best car you can get for the price if youre looking for a little luxury in your life.

our family is into Sonatas and for a good reason the ride is like a flying carpet because of the shocks plus all the safety features we would like to meet the design team in person. Sonata limited lacks nothing for the price .

| Year-Round High | $21,862 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,816 CAD |

There are 104 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Sonata earns a 5/5 user rating, and owners consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, and abundance of features. It also gets strong marks for its safety features and comfortable interior, with many drivers comparing it favourably to rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a well-equipped midsize sedan with standout styling, lots of tech, and plenty of room for passengers and cargo. 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as smooth and comfortable, and the owner feedback points to a car that many people have found dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. The strong satisfaction from owners suggests you can count on it for long-term ownership if you choose a well-kept example. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the overall ownership experience and more about making sure the specific car you buy has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 104 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.81% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,697 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $18,802 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,816 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you may be better positioned to absorb future depreciation. The Sonata’s strong feature content and broad appeal should help it remain attractive to used shoppers, especially if you keep it in good condition.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $18,865 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,802 CAD average.
- It adds a more performance-focused N Line option.
The bottom line: If you want the best value, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and owner satisfaction is excellent. If you’re willing to pay a bit more for a more performance-oriented setup, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
How does the 2020 Hyundai Sonata compare to the 2020 Toyota Camry?
