Is the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a 4.71/5 user rating and an 8.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable seating, great features, value for the price, safety features, and spaciousness. The Santa Fe also stands out as a practical five-passenger crossover that sits between compact and midsize SUVs, which makes it a strong fit if you want family-friendly utility without moving up to a larger three-row model.

The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the polarizing design. Even so, the Santa Fe’s strong equipment list and broad appeal make it a compelling choice if you value comfort and everyday usability over driving excitement.

31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you a decent amount of market choice.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?

Hyundai’s five-year/100,000-kilometre bumper-to-bumper warranty and five years of roadside assistance add peace of mind for used buyers, especially if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and Ultimate trims differ meaningfully. The base trim can be missing useful equipment, while higher trims add features such as a turbocharged engine, more advanced camera systems, and more premium cabin and tech upgrades.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a 185-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 235 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The turbo engine is the stronger choice, especially if you want better passing power or expect to drive at altitude.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a driver monitoring system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available on Essential or Preferred, so you need Luxury trim for that coverage.
• Infotainment: Every Santa Fe has Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Preferred adds SiriusXM satellite radio and Blue Link connected services, while Ultimate brings an 8-inch display, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, and a 12-speaker Infinity audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The entry-level engine with front-wheel drive uses 10.8 L/100 km city, 8.0 highway, and 9.6 combined. With all-wheel drive, that rises to 11.3 city, 8.8 highway, and 10.1 combined. The turbocharged engine with all-wheel drive uses 12.0 city, 9.2 highway, and 10.7 combined.

Which 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point, but it is the trim most likely to leave you wanting more. It makes sense only if you are focused on keeping the purchase price down and are comfortable adding fewer convenience and safety extras.
• Preferred: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds meaningful everyday equipment, including SiriusXM, Blue Link connected services, and more safety-related content. If you want the smartest balance of price and features, start here.
• Luxury: This is the trim to target if you want the more advanced safety hardware, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and the Blind View Monitor. It is the better pick if safety tech matters most to you.
• Ultimate: This is the most fully equipped version, with the larger 8-inch display, navigation, wireless charging, and the 12-speaker Infinity audio system. Choose it if you want the most premium Santa Fe experience and are willing to pay for it.

For safety-package shoppers, the Essential and Preferred trims do not include blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert; you need Luxury trim for that.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough price softness to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 484 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.53% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $20,174 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?

The current average of $20,174 CAD sits slightly below last year's $23,331 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Santa Fe has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about pricing if they want to move the vehicle quickly. The current market is softer than it was a year ago, so resale expectations should be based on today’s lower benchmark rather than last year’s higher average.

Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time, especially for a model that buyers already associate with comfort, value, and safety. If the Santa Fe continues to attract shoppers looking for a practical family crossover, that should help it hold interest better than a less well-liked alternative.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The Santa Fe’s safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a driver monitoring system. A rear-seat reminder system is standard, and Preferred and higher trims add safe exit assist. Luxury trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and the Blind View Monitor, which shows a live camera feed of the blind spots in the instrument cluster.

One important caveat is that blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available on Essential or Preferred, so you need to move up to Luxury trim for those features.

Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.53% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It is the only Santa Fe in the lineup for this year, and it brings useful updates such as a standard rear-seat reminder system and an available camera-based Blind-Spot View Monitor.

The bottom line: If you want a five-passenger Santa Fe with strong value, good safety credentials, and a broad spread of trims, the 2020 model is a sensible place to focus. If you are especially price-sensitive, the softer market makes this year worth a close look; if you want more space or a newer feature set, a different model year may be a better fit.
