How much does the 2020 Hyundai Kona cost?

Prices have softened 13.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 335 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona a good car?

Yes — you rate it 4.7/5, and our experts give it 6.8/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise the Kona for its fun driving experience, responsive handling, good features, and fuel efficiency. The overview also points to its stylish design and lively personality as major reasons it stands out. On the other hand, the expert review flags a cramped cabin and limited cargo space, so it suits you best if you value driving enjoyment and a higher seating position more than interior room.

Only 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful shopping.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the Kona’s good features and fuel efficiency. The expert review also notes that Hyundai’s usual long-warranty reputation and good reliability are part of the brand’s appeal, even if this model does not deliver the same value story as some rivals. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright dependability and more about living with the Kona’s small cabin and limited cargo space over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base model gives you the essentials, while higher trims add more convenience and safety equipment. The biggest feature gaps show up at the lower end, where you miss out on the more upscale exterior details and added equipment found higher up the range.
• Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre inline-four with 147 hp on the standard models, while the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine with 175 hp is reserved for the higher trims. The non-turbo models use a 6-speed automatic, while the turbo gets a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
• Safety package: The Kona includes a driver-assistance suite with lane-keep assist, driver attention monitoring, and forward emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is added on higher trims, while pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate.
• Infotainment: The base setup uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. Higher trims add an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-litre AWD model is rated at 9.2 L/100 km city, 7.8 highway, and 8.6 combined. The 1.6T AWD is rated at 9.0 city, 8.0 highway, and 8.6 combined. FWD models are rated as low as 7.0 L/100 km on the highway and 7.9 combined.

Which 2020 Hyundai Kona trim should I buy?

The 2020 Hyundai Kona is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Trend, and Luxury.

Here's the short version:

• Essential: This is the entry point if you want the Kona’s styling, standard touchscreen, heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and core safety tech without stretching your budget. It makes sense if you mainly want the Kona’s design and driving feel at the lowest cost.
• Preferred: This is the better-value choice if you want a more complete everyday package without jumping to the pricier turbo models. It adds useful equipment while staying closer to the lower end of the range.
• Trend: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it brings the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine, standard AWD, and the equipment most drivers will want. If you care most about the Kona’s fun-to-drive character, this is the one to target.
• Luxury: This trim is for you if you want the more upscale convenience features, including the sunroof and adaptive cruise control, along with the stronger equipment mix.

The safety package includes lane-keep assist and a driver attention monitor on every trim, while pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Kona?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 335 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.72% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $17,447 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Hyundai Kona's resale value?

The current average of $17,453 CAD sits slightly below last year's $20,230 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Kona has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you own one, the current market shows that demand is still present, but buyers are clearly price-sensitive. That means condition, trim, and equipment will matter when you go to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Hyundai Kona safe?

The 2020 Kona scored five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with maximum ratings for driver and passenger in the frontal test and for driver and rear passenger in the side test, and it scored four-star ratings in the rollover risk test.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Kona comes standard with forward emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. The IIHS rated it a 2020 Top Safety Pick, helped by Good crash-test results, optional LED headlights, and a Superior rating for forward emergency braking. Pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, and the expert review notes that it scored lower in detecting a person than another vehicle. It also does not include front knee airbags or rear side airbags.

Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Kona or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.72% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds more standard driver assists and keeps the Kona’s lively, stylish character.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,171 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,453 CAD average.
• It broadens the trim range and leans harder into value-forward appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the better price and the core Kona experience, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to spend more for a wider trim spread and a slightly newer model year, the 2021 is worth a look. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020’s softer pricing makes it the more compelling starting point.
