CarGurus Analysis: 2020 GMC Sierra 1500
Summary
With 523 currently listed for sale and an average price of $37,274 CAD, 33.7% of 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 4.28 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out as a full-size pickup that leans upscale without losing the capability buyers expect from a truck. In this generation, GMC positions the Sierra as the more premium sibling in the GM pickup pair, with cabin quality aimed at a near-luxury feel rather than extra ornamentation. It also offers a broad range of trims, from work-focused to luxury and off-road-oriented versions, which helps it appeal to buyers with very different needs.
For 2020, the Sierra 1500 benefits from the fifth generation’s strong mix of powertrain choice and practical features. The available engines include a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, a 4.3-litre V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft, a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft, a 6.2-litre V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft, and a 3.0-litre inline-six Duramax turbodiesel with 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft. The truck also offers six-, eight-, and 10-speed automatic transmissions, rear- and four-wheel drive, and distinctive equipment such as the MultiPro tailgate. Buyers looking for a newer Sierra are also likely to appreciate its reputation for reliability, with the 2020 model singled out for strong reliability ratings and satisfied owners.
There are still a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The Sierra’s trim and engine line-up can be overwhelming, and used examples can be expensive. Even so, the 2020 model remains appealing because it combines upscale design, strong towing-oriented capability, useful connectivity, and a wide spread of configurations in one package.

Absolutely stunning vehicle. Pure luxury pick-up truck. Serious power, w/a 6.2L V8 engine; smooth, wonderful ride, lots of driver convenience & safety features; comfortable seating, roomy cab interior....I could go on. GMC has left nothing out of their Sierra Denali line. Beautiful truck - everyone Ive talked to feels the same. Commanding presence on the road. Tops Dodge Ram & Ford models, in my opinion. I have a 2020 model. The 2023 model tops even THAT!!!

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?
Generally — the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.3/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise the spacious interior, advanced technology, strong performance, smooth ride, and the range of available options. In practical terms, that fits a full-size pickup that aims to feel upscale while still covering work, family, and towing needs. With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive example.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a truck that many owners find dependable and trouble-free over time, with strong reliability sentiment in the model-year overview. At the same time, some owners mention engine-related concerns, so a careful pre-purchase inspection and service-history review are smart for used buyers who want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.

- Inventory: There are 531 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.96% compared with last year.

What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $36,994 CAD sits slightly below last year's $42,997 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at a strong price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. The fact that demand remains supported by owner satisfaction is a positive sign for future resale strength.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $39,069 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $36,994 CAD average.
- It adds an optional carbon-fibre composite cargo bed.
The bottom line:
Choose the 2020 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping the used market carefully. If you want the newer year and are willing to pay more for a few added touches, the 2021 is the better secondary path.
