Is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a compact SUV with a more premium feel than many rivals, and its 3.5/5 user rating reflects that balance.

Owners commonly praise its smooth driving experience, premium interior, and decent gas mileage. Many also like its compact size and handling, which fit well if you want something practical without giving up an engaging road feel. If you value a small SUV that feels a bit more upscale and still works well for everyday use, the Tiguan has a clear appeal.

With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan was designed as a compact SUV with a smooth and responsive drive, but it did not build a strong reputation for reliability. The model’s history includes engine, cooling system, and electrical problems, so you should approach used examples with care.

Owners do describe it as smooth and, in many cases, decent on fuel, and some of that day-to-day satisfaction can make ownership feel worthwhile. Still, long-term ownership risk is something you should factor in carefully, especially if you want a used SUV that is likely to be trouble-free over time.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some confidence if you are patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 392 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.94% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $13,247 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $13,637 CAD sits slightly below last year's $16,033 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. If you plan to sell later, the softer pricing means your resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and maintenance history. A well-kept example should still be easier to move than one with visible wear or unresolved mechanical issues.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.94% compared with last year.

The bottom line: The 2017 Tiguan makes sense if you want the earlier, more compact version with a premium-leaning feel, tidy handling, and a lower entry price than newer alternatives. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2017 can be the better value play; if you want more space and a more modern layout, a different year may suit you better.
