CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan
Summary

Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan 3.5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that aimed for a more premium feel than many rivals. It was pitched as a slightly sportier, more premium alternative to vehicles such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, and it was conceived with a smooth and responsive drive in mind. That character is reinforced by its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, which gives it punchy performance, even if fuel economy was not one of its strengths. Front-wheel drive was the default layout on the base Trendline trim, while 4Motion all-wheel drive was optional on that trim and standard on the Comfortline and Highline trims.
It also brought a quality-focused cabin and useful everyday versatility. The interior was described as roomy and good quality, and the model’s first-generation layout included front-wheel drive as standard with all-wheel drive available on higher-spec versions. An update for the 2012 model year brought updated styling and equipment upgrades, and an R-Line package arrived for the 2013 model year with a sportier look. For buyers, that combination of upscale feel, tidy handling, and practical packaging is a big part of the Tiguan’s appeal.
There are trade-offs, though. The first-generation Tiguan has a poor reputation for reliability, with engine, cooling system, and electrical problems noted, especially on 2009 and 2010 models. It was also expensive when new, and the engine did not deliver great fuel economy. Even so, for shoppers who value a compact SUV with a more polished driving experience and a nicer interior than many of its peers, the 2017 Tiguan remains distinctive.

The car is okay but known for problems over 100k miles that can add up in maintenance fees. Car is priced at max value, in my opinion it’s over priced with knowing you got to put money in it.

Owners commonly praise its smooth driving experience, premium interior, and decent gas mileage, while also appreciating its compact size and handling. Is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that aimed for a more premium feel than many rivals. It was pitched as a slightly sportier, more premium alternative to vehicles such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, and it was conceived with a smooth and responsive drive in mind.
That said, owners and shoppers should pay close attention to long-term ownership risk, since used examples can carry repair exposure that makes a thorough inspection especially important.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully and wait for the right example.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 382 listings available.

The current average of $13,638 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,763 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and maintenance history than to broad market momentum. If you keep the vehicle well maintained, you may be better positioned to protect value when it is time to sell.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.48% compared with last year.
The bottom line: The 2017 Tiguan makes the most sense if you want the earlier, more compact Tiguan with a premium-feeling drive and you can find one in strong condition at a competitive price. If you are shopping mainly on value, the current pricing trend gives you room to be selective; if you want more space and a newer-feeling package, a different year may be the better fit.
