Why it stands out
The 2018 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a roomy, well-equipped midsize sedan that offers a lot of features for the money. It sits in the Sonata’s seventh generation, which was designed to be a tech-forward and efficient family car with an affordable price tag. For 2018, Hyundai had already improved the car’s interior quality and materials, and the model also gained 7- or 8-inch touchscreens along with a broader set of safety equipment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available later in the model run, adding to its everyday appeal.
What makes the 2018 Sonata especially distinctive is how much equipment it packs into a mainstream sedan. Standard features included a tiny 3.5-inch LCD screen, alloy wheels, Bluetooth, and a tilt-and-telescope wheel, while available equipment could include leather upholstery, navigation, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, parking sensors, and other upgrades. It also earned Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ designations from IIHS every year it was on sale, which strengthens its case for buyers who value safety and value together.
There are, however, a couple of important drawbacks to keep in mind. Consumer Reports gives the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings, with issues centred around excessive oil consumption and premature wear in the “Theta II” engine family. The 2018 Sonata is also vulnerable to theft, which can mean higher insurance premiums and extra precautions. Even so, it remains an appealing used choice because it is affordable, comfortable, and generously equipped.

2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited is a great value. Tons of features in this model. Not worth paying $2k extra audio and other features (theyre really cool, but not worth that much extra). Among the Sonatas less-known benefits are a large (18.5 gallon) gas tank, larger trunk than comparable models, great turning radius, better interior and warmer seat heaters than comparable models such as Honda Accord. (Sonatas resale value isnt as high as Accord, but it should be, imo.) Tons of front-seat legroom, good size sunroof and less obstruction when youre looking at traffic through rear-view mirror. My 2nd Sonata, and the first had very few maintenance issues. Really reliable car with good gas mileage.
