What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The entry-level L trim is the value edition and comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, heated front seats, and keyless entry. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, and the top Limited Ultimate trim brings advanced systems such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning, along with leather seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Infinity sound system, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. A Drive Mode selector adjusts engine, transmission, and steering behaviour for Normal, Sport, and Eco settings, and the car is front-wheel drive only.
• Safety package: Available safety equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. The top Limited Ultimate trim is where you find the most advanced driver-assistance features.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation, and the 8-inch touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates fuel economy at 8.3 L/100 km city, 6.4 L/100 km highway, and 7.4 L/100 km combined with the six-speed automatic transmission. With the manual, those figures rise to 9.1 L/100 km city, 6.6 L/100 km highway, and 8.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 9 trim levels: L, LE, GL, GLS, SE, Sport, Limited, Limited SE, and Limited Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the value-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Elantra with heated front seats and keyless entry, but you are comfortable with the manual transmission.
• LE: This is the first step up from the base trim and is a sensible choice if you want a little more equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
• GL: This trim adds another layer of convenience and is a good middle-ground option if you want more features than the entry trims provide.
• GLS: This is a stronger all-rounder if you want a more complete feature set while still staying away from the top-end pricing.
• SE: This trim continues the gradual upgrade path and is worth considering if you want a better-equipped daily driver without jumping to the luxury-oriented trims.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the sportier-looking version of the Elantra lineup, but keep expectations focused on appearance and trim character rather than outright performance.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it combines a strong equipment mix with the features that make the Elantra feel most polished.
• Limited SE: This is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for extra comfort and convenience.
• Limited Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most advanced safety and technology features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and the 8-inch touchscreen.

The safety-package trim note is simple: the most advanced driver-assistance features are concentrated in the Limited Ultimate trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 373 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.61% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $10,209 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $10,252 CAD sits slightly below last year's $12,006 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Elantra has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you price it competitively. For a future seller, the current trend means you may need to be realistic about expectations, especially if the market continues to favour shoppers. On the other hand, a well-kept example with desirable equipment should still attract attention because the model’s value proposition remains strong.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a four-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Hyundai includes a broad set of safety features, including electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection.

A key caveat is that NHTSA raised a concern about side impacts potentially causing injury to rear passengers.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 25.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.61% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It stands out as a thorough redesign with a fresh look, strong technology, and a clear emphasis on safety and efficiency.

The bottom line: If you want the most polished mix of styling, technology, safety, and value in this generation, the 2017 is the one to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still shop nearby years, but the 2017 is the better pick when you want the redesign benefits and a strong feature set without paying new-car money.
