CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Legacy
Summary
With 57 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,477 CAD, 26.3% of 2016 Subaru Legacy listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Legacy stands out for making all-wheel drive a standard part of the package, which remains one of its biggest selling points in the midsize sedan class. It also benefits from the sixth generation’s more refined character, with a more advanced feel, a more comfortable ride, and a quieter cabin than earlier versions. For buyers who want a practical sedan with a strong safety focus and year-round traction, that combination gives the Legacy a clear identity.
For this model year, the 2016 Subaru Legacy was offered with a 175-hp 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine or a 256-hp 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder was rated at an estimated 9.4 litres per 100 kilometres with the manual transmission and 7.9 L/100 km combined with the CVT, while the six-cylinder delivered an estimated 10.2 L/100 km combined with the CVT. Standard equipment included EyeSight on more models in this generation, a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the 2.5i, Bluetooth streaming, USB and aux inputs, a backup camera, and 17-inch steel wheels. Higher trims added features such as a sunroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, fog lights, heated seats, and, on the technology package, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning.
That said, the Legacy was not the most exciting choice in its class. Its styling was described as dull, its interior could feel cheap, and performance was considered sluggish. Even so, the 2016 Subaru Legacy remains appealing if you value standard AWD, a broad spread of available safety and convenience features, and a reputation for solid all-weather usability over flash.

How much does the 2016 Subaru Legacy cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,488 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $11,682 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $14,277 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,193 CAD |

There are 59 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — with a 5/5 user rating, the 2016 Subaru Legacy looks like a strong fit if you want a practical midsize sedan with standard all-wheel drive, a more refined sixth-generation feel, a comfortable ride, and a quieter cabin than earlier versions. The overview also points to a strong safety focus and year-round traction as key reasons to consider it, especially if you value usability over flash. 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview suggests the Legacy’s appeal comes from its practical design, standard all-wheel drive, and solid all-weather usability rather than high-strung performance. For used buyers, that usually means you should focus on maintenance history and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk is more about how the car was cared for than about chasing a sporty driving experience.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Legacy?
It looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 59 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.01% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,682 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $12,488 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,193 CAD.
That softer pricing can make the car easier to buy now, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you plan to resell later, the Legacy’s broad appeal as a practical all-wheel-drive sedan should help, especially among shoppers who value year-round traction and a comfort-first driving experience. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 is a sensible choice if you want standard all-wheel drive, a quieter and more refined cabin, and a practical sedan with a strong safety focus. If you’re price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years and shop whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, mileage, and asking price.
