CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Legacy
Summary
With 57 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,604 CAD, 22.8% of 2016 Subaru Legacy listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Legacy stands out for making all-wheel drive a standard part of the package, which remains one of its biggest selling points in the midsize-sedan class. It also benefits from Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite being more widely available in this generation, helping give the car a strong safety-focused appeal. For shoppers who want a sedan that feels more secure and capable in poor weather than many rivals, that combination is a major part of the Legacy’s identity.
For 2016, the Legacy’s engine choices included a 175-hp 2.5-litre four-cylinder and a 256-hp 3.6-litre six-cylinder, both paired with a continuously variable transmission. Standard equipment on the 2.5i included a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth streaming and USB/aux inputs, a backup camera, and 17-inch steel wheels. Touring models added features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, fog lights, and a six-speaker stereo, while the technology package brought EyeSight and several driver-assist features.
The 2016 Legacy is appealing because it blends comfort, standard AWD, and a long list of available safety and convenience features at a price that often undercuts some mainstream competitors. Its drawbacks are also clear: the car’s styling is described as dull, the interior feels cheap, and performance is sluggish. Even so, for buyers prioritising all-weather traction and safety equipment over excitement, it remains a sensible and distinctive choice.

How much does the 2016 Subaru Legacy cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,509 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $11,687 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $14,272 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,062 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.04% |
Prices have softened 11.04% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 62 listings available, which suggests a decent amount of inventory for shoppers comparing prices.
Is the 2016 Subaru Legacy a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for the 2016 Subaru Legacy. The Legacy stands out for making all-wheel drive standard, and it adds a more refined feel, a more comfortable ride, and a quieter cabin than earlier versions. If you want a practical midsize sedan with a strong safety focus and year-round traction, it has a clear identity. There are 25.8% of listings priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Legacy reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Legacy’s appeal comes from its standard all-wheel drive, its practical equipment list, and its reputation for solid all-weather usability. For used buyers, that usually points to a car that can make sense as a dependable daily driver if it has been maintained properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Legacy?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 62 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $11,687 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $12,509 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,062 CAD.
That price movement suggests the Legacy has become more accessible for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The model’s standard all-wheel drive and practical reputation should help it remain appealing to shoppers who value year-round usability. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Legacy makes the most sense if you want standard all-wheel drive, a practical cabin, and a used price that has eased from last year. If you are price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby model years to see whether a slightly newer or older example offers a better mix of equipment and value.
