CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Sorento
Summary
With 213 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,709 CAD, 22.5% of 2016 Kia Sorento listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Sorento marked a clear step up in size and presence, growing 19 centimetres longer than the first generation and 10 cm longer than the second generation. Its styling was more rounded, and it moved closer to what is now considered a midsize SUV. That larger footprint also helped make room for a more practical cabin, with improved materials and more passenger space than before.
What makes this Sorento especially appealing is the breadth of its equipment and powertrain choices. At launch in Canada, it was offered in LX, EX, and SX trims, each with plus grades, and the base LX came with a 185 hp 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine. A 240 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder was available across the range, while a 290 hp 3.3-litre V6 returned for three-row models. The Sorento also offered a six-speed automatic transmission, front-wheel drive on the base setup, and all-wheel drive on higher grades, with heated front seats standard in Canada. Safety and technology were part of the appeal too, with standard rear parking sensors and available forward collision and lane-departure warnings, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arriving for 2017.
There are a few trade-offs to keep in mind. The base four-cylinder was described as too weak for the larger Sorento, and the third row was best left to smaller passengers. Still, the 2016 Sorento stands out as a well-rounded used SUV because it combines a more mature design, a stronger interior, and a long list of available features with the kind of practicality many buyers want.

How much does the 2016 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,790 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $10,790 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $14,026 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,011 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −22.99% |
Prices have softened 22.99% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 219 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Kia Sorento earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its reliability, performance, smooth ride, handling, and good fuel efficiency, while also appreciating the range of features it offers. For you, that makes it a sensible used SUV if you want a practical midsize model with more passenger space and a more mature overall feel. With 22.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, and drivers also describe the Sorento as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. That matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for regular commuting, family duty, and longer-term ownership.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained properly, since any higher-mileage SUV can become more expensive to own if upkeep has been neglected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sorento?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings closely.
- Deal availability: 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 219 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 22.99% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,790 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $10,790 CAD sits slightly below last year's $14,011 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking an immediate depreciation hit. The Sorento’s broad appeal as a practical midsize SUV should still support steady demand, especially among shoppers looking for space and features without paying new-SUV money.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 22.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2016 Sorento makes the most sense if you want a well-equipped midsize SUV with strong owner approval and a softer used-market price than it had a year ago. If you are especially price-sensitive, it is worth comparing nearby model years to see whether a newer or older Sorento offers a better mix of equipment and asking price, but the 2016 remains a solid value-focused target.
