Porsche Macan vs Subaru Forester Hybrid

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. The model received a fresh styling update, larger standard wheels, and a new centre console with haptic touch controls, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functionality. The Macan lineup in Canada included four models: the base Macan, Macan T, Macan S, and Macan GTS, with the Macan Turbo's high-output powertrain now featured in the GTS. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, showcased a Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, exuding a sporty and upscale appearance with its red leather interior and metallic accents.

The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid introduced a new design for its sixth-generation model, featuring a more cohesive yet conventional look compared to its predecessor. The Forester Hybrid maintained a rugged appearance with black plastic elements, hinting at its off-road capabilities. Inside, the Forester Hybrid offered a modern cabin with a large vertical infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument panel exclusive to the hybrid model. While the cabin included hard plastics, it provided ample comfort with soft-touch materials in key areas and heated outboard rear seats. The Forester Hybrid's design aimed to appeal to a broader audience, balancing personality with mass appeal.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powerful engines, with the base Macan and Macan T featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Macan GTS inherited a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 from the previous Macan Turbo, delivering 434 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Our Macan S test vehicle was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6, generating 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. The Macan's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and fully variable AWD system contributed to its dynamic performance, while the re-tuned steering and suspension enhanced ride and handling. The Macan S excelled on twisty roads, offering precise steering and impressive grip, though its fuel consumption was rated at 13.0 L/100 km.

The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid featured a 2.5-litre flat four-cylinder "boxer" engine paired with a parallel hybrid system, producing a combined 194 horsepower. The hybrid powertrain included two motor/generators and a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, providing adequate acceleration and smooth transitions between electric and internal combustion power. The Forester Hybrid's AWD system, combined with its hybrid components, offered better traction and consistent off-road performance. While the hybrid transmission could feel slower at higher speeds, the system functioned seamlessly in most driving conditions. The Forester Hybrid excelled off-road with its X-Mode drive programming and hill descent control, providing a balanced performance for both urban and adventurous driving.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a comfortable driving experience with optional 14-way power-adjustable front seats featuring heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console with haptic touch controls provided a modern look but required drivers to look away from the road to use them. The Macan offered 488 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the seats folded down.

The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid provided excellent forward visibility with thin front roof pillars and a spacious, airy cockpit. The rear seats offered ample legroom and headroom, enhanced by a standard panoramic sunroof. The Forester Hybrid included practical storage solutions, such as a wireless charging pad, cup holders, and door pockets. With 779 litres of cargo space, the Forester Hybrid accommodated bulkier items, and its hands-free power liftgate and power remote seatback releases made loading easier.

The 2022 Porsche Macan featured a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Porsche Communication Management (PCM), offering wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a navigation system. While the user experience was generally intuitive, the voice recognition system was less reliable compared to competitors. The Macan included stereo volume and tuning controls separate from the touchscreen, reducing the need for interaction while driving.

The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid came equipped with an 11.6-inch vertical infotainment touchscreen, featuring built-in navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
