Porsche Macan vs Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original charm, despite undergoing several updates since its debut in 2015. With a refreshed styling, larger standard wheels, and a new centre console featuring haptic touch controls, the Macan continued to exude a sporty and upscale vibe. The Macan S, our test vehicle, showcased a Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, embodying Porsche's tradition of graceful aging. Inside, the Macan drew inspiration from other Porsche models, featuring a left-side ignition switch, a large tachometer, and a centre console housing most secondary controls. The red leather, gloss black interior trim, and silver metallic accents added to its upscale, sporty, and purposeful appearance.

In contrast, the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid built upon the evolutionary improvements of its predecessors, maintaining its attractive design. The 2026 model carried forward changes from 2024, including new sheet metal and chassis construction. The most noticeable update was the frameless grille with a curved wing bar, creating a visual connection with the headlights. Inside, the Crosstrek Hybrid balanced rugged utility with refined comfort, featuring soft-touch surfaces and durable plastics. The Canadian model came with black leather upholstery, chrome-trimmed power window switches, and "Hybrid"-stitched floor mats. Standard features included heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power moonroof, enhancing the cabin's airy atmosphere.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powertrains, with the Macan S featuring a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6 engine producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This engine, previously used in the Macan GTS, allowed the Macan S to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. All Macans came with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and a fully variable all-wheel-drive system. The Macan S also benefited from larger 20-inch standard wheels and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adaptive damping air suspension. The driving experience was exhilarating, with precise steering, unyielding grip, and fade-free brakes, although the brake pedal required more pressure than expected.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, on the other hand, featured a 2.5-litre Atkinson/Miller-cycle engine paired with an 118 hp traction motor, resulting in a total system output of 194 hp. This made it the fastest Crosstrek to date, with smoother acceleration than the gas-only version. The hybrid powertrain utilized two motor-generators, one for engine start/stop and battery charging, and the other as a drive motor and for regenerative braking. During testing, the Crosstrek Hybrid recorded 7.6 L/100 km, slightly above the estimated 6.5 L/100 km. Subaru's AWD system, combined with X-Mode traction management, provided capable performance on various terrains, although the steering felt light and somewhat disconnected.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a comfortable experience for the driver and front-seat passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats featuring heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console with haptic touch controls provided a clean look but required drivers to look away from the road to use them. Cargo space measured 488 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the rear seats folded.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid improved upon its predecessors by offering more cargo space, with 527 litres behind the rear seats and 1,433 litres with the rear row folded. The fuel tank remained a generous 63 litres, allowing for long-distance travel without frequent refuelling. Rear-seat space was ample, with 926 millimetres of legroom, surpassing competitors like the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Up front, storage was limited, but the Crosstrek Hybrid included a wireless charging pad and deep door pockets.

The 2022 Porsche Macan came equipped with a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Porsche Communication Management (PCM), featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a navigation system. While the user experience was generally intuitive, the voice recognition system was less reliable than competitors. Fortunately, stereo volume and climate controls were separate from the touchscreen, reducing the need for interaction while driving.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid featured an 11.6-inch touchscreen, but the software was slow and prone to lag. While wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, many controls were managed via touchscreen buttons, which could be frustrating. The Crosstrek Hybrid included a Harman Kardon stereo and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, although the navigation map couldn't display Google Maps when using phone projection.

The 2022 Porsche Macan included standard lane-departure warning and a reversing camera, with optional features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. While these technologies performed as expected, the Macan lacked more advanced driving assistance features. Parking assistance options included a surround-view camera and Park Assist system.

The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, as the top model in the range, came with Subaru's EyeSight advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pre-collision braking. The Crosstrek Hybrid also featured a surround-view camera and DriverFocus driver distraction mitigation system. While the 2025 model received mixed safety ratings, Subaru addressed issues by adding side-curtain airbags to the rear seats.
