Reviews Summary

Porsche is synonymous with performance. From the automaker’s inception and first production model, the 1948 Porsche 356, it has built vehicles that are fun to drive and engineered with German precision and excellence. Well, mostly. There have been some duds along the way. But that doesn’t apply to the Macan, a compact SUV that is Porsche’s best-selling model. As it should, the 2022 Porsche Macan drives more like a sports car than a sport/utility, and it receives several updates to keep it fresh as Porsche prepares an electric replacement for the popular SUV.

Reviews Summary

With more range, more power, and improved technology, the Chevrolet Bolt EV returns after a three-year hiatus. It’s also one of the most affordable EVs in Canada, but it’s due to remain in production only until mid-2027.

Verdict: The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV is an excellent choice for shoppers seeking an electric vehicle that won't break the bank. It may not be all that fancy or refined, but it gets the basics right when it comes to range and capabilities.

2022 Porsche Macan

10/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

5/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. The model received a fresh styling update, larger standard wheels, and a new centre console with haptic touch controls, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functionality. The Macan lineup in Canada included four models: the base Macan, the new Macan T, the Macan S, and the Macan GTS, with the latter two benefiting from high-output powertrains. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, showcased a striking Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, embodying Porsche's tradition of combining elegance with performance. Inside, the Macan featured a sporty and upscale cabin, highlighted by red leather, gloss black trim, and silver metallic accents, drawing inspiration from other Porsche models.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt maintained a familiar appearance, with minor styling changes that made it resemble a conventional gas-powered car. The model continued as an EUV, offering a tall and narrow stance that prioritized utility and interior space. The interior saw significant updates, including a larger digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen, with the gear selector moved to the steering column for added storage space. Despite the dominance of hard plastic surfaces, the Bolt's cabin provided adequate comfort with padded touchpoints and Evotex synthetic leather in the RS trim. The rear seating area, though lacking padding for the door armrests, offered ample headroom and thigh support, making it suitable for adult passengers.

Performance

2022 Porsche Macan

10/10

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powerful engines, with the base Macan and Macan T featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Macan GTS inherited a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 from the previous Macan Turbo, delivering 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Our Macan S test vehicle was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6, generating 375 hp and 383 lb-ft, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. All Macans came with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and a fully variable AWD system. The Macan S featured larger 20-inch wheels, PASM adaptive damping air suspension, and optional performance upgrades, providing an exhilarating driving experience with precise handling and impressive braking performance.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt introduced a new 65-kilowatt-hour lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, reducing costs and reliance on rare earth minerals. A new motor from Chevy's Equinox EV delivered 210 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels, achieving a 0-100 km/h time in the low seven-second range. The Bolt's acceleration was quick compared to gas-powered subcompact SUVs, with responsive pedal inputs and one-pedal driving available. The ride was firm but not overly stiff, with road noise more noticeable due to the absence of an internal combustion engine. The Bolt's low centre of gravity, thanks to the heavy battery, contributed to its agility on curvy roads. On a full charge, the Bolt offered an estimated range of 422 kilometres, with improved charging speed allowing a 10% to 80% recharge in 25 minutes.

Form and function

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

6/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan provided a comfortable driving experience for the driver and front-seat passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console featured haptic touch controls, though it required drivers to look away from the road to use them. Cargo space measured 488 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the rear seats folded down, accommodating four full-size suitcases.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt offered an upright driving position with ample space for larger occupants, though taller drivers might have wished for more telescopic extension from the steering wheel. The rear seats provided plenty of headroom and thigh support, with a flat floor reducing discomfort for centre-seat passengers. The Bolt's cargo capacity was 459 litres behind the rear seats, with a large bin underneath the floor for additional storage. The rear seatbacks folded flat with the cargo floor, enhancing luggage space. Upfront, the Bolt offered ample storage for personal items, including a large bin with movable dividers, a deep centre armrest bin, and a wireless phone charger.

Technology

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

6/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan featured a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a navigation system. The system included touch-sensing virtual buttons and proximity sensing, though the voice recognition system was less responsive compared to competitors. The Macan offered stereo volume and tuning controls below the screen, with separate climate control, reducing the need to interact with the touchscreen while driving.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt came with an 11-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.3-inch centre touchscreen, running on a Google-based operating system. While Apple CarPlay and standalone Android Auto were not supported, the system offered logical menus, sharp graphics, and quick responses. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, a digital rear-view mirror, and a wireless charging pad. The Bolt's navigation system could locate charging stations and precondition the battery for optimal charging rates. Additionally, the Bolt offered vehicle-to-load charging, allowing it to serve as a backup power source for a home.

Safety

2027 Chevrolet Bolt

7/10

The 2022 Porsche Macan included standard lane-departure warning and a reversing camera, with optional blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Macan's safety technologies performed as expected, though it lacked advanced driving assistance features. Optional parking aids included a surround-view camera and Park Assist system, which could steer the vehicle into parking spaces.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt had not yet been crash-tested, but it was expected to achieve high scores based on its platform. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitors. The optional Technology package added a surround-view camera system, a digital rear-view mirror, and traffic-sign recognition. GM's Super Cruise hands-free highway driving system was available for an additional cost, offering advanced driving assistance.
