Reviews Summary

It’s getting hard to find a basic subcompact sedan, but Nissan is keeping the faith.

The Nissan Versa returned to the Canadian line-up in the 2021 model year after a six-year hiatus, slotting below the Sentra in the lineup. The most recent redesign was just a year earlier, for the 2020 model year. For 2023, the Versa gets a handful of updates, including freshened styling and more available tech features. In addition to the Versa S, the lineup includes SV and SR models; we tested the latter for this review.

Since the Versa has been on sale, the ranks of subcompact cars have thinned considerably. The Chevrolet Sonic, the Ford Fiesta, the Honda Fit, the Hyundai Accent, and the Toyota Yaris are no longer sold in North America. That leaves the Kia Rio and the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback as the Versa’s main competitors, and the Rio is on its way out of Canada for 2024 as well. But, as is always the case in this market segment, shoppers must also consider whether to buy a new car like the Versa or a potentially better-equipped used car for similar money.

Reviews Summary

It’s easy to discount the value of a family sedan with so many crossovers on the road. But the fact is that this body style makes a lot of sense for a lot of families. The more manageable and maneuverable the vehicle, the better for teaching budding young drivers. Lighter weight also translates to better fuel economy, not to be sneered at when there are mouths to feed and tuitions to pay. And your typical midsize sedan is plenty spacious for four.

Fortunately, automakers have not forgotten about the venerable family sedan, keeping one another on their toes with updates, and it’s consumers who stand to benefit from that sort of healthy competition. Now, it’s the 2024 Hyundai Sonata’s turn for a mid-generation refresh.

Verdict: We already liked the Sonata, and this refresh only improves it. The styling update and generous standard feature set make it a compelling choice.

Look and feel

2023 Nissan Versa

8/10

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Versa borrowed its design cues from Nissan’s larger sedans, the Sentra and Altima, giving it a more upscale appearance. The black trim on the rear roof pillar created a "floating" roof effect, while the V-Motion grille added a distinctive touch. The Versa's sleek profile and wide stance made it look more like a traditional sedan rather than an econobox. The model came with various wheel options, including 15-inch steel wheels for the base S, 16-inch alloys for the SV, and 17-inch alloys for the SR. The 2023 update introduced a more elaborate V-Motion grille, a new wheel design for the SR, and the Grey Sky Pearl paint, enhancing its mature look.

Inside, the Versa showcased creativity with its large round air vents and an elaborate dashboard that wrapped around the central touchscreen and climate controls. Despite being an economy car, the fit and finish were commendable. The SR model featured red stitching and upholstery inserts, reminiscent of the early 2000s Sentra SE-R, adding a sporty touch. The SV and SR trims offered additional conveniences like heated front seats, automatic climate control, and a centre console with an armrest. The SR also included a leather-wrapped steering wheel and LED headlights, making it less dull for an economy car.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid received significant styling updates, particularly at the front with a streamlined fascia and a "seamless horizon lamp" lightbar, giving it a modern flair. The badge was repositioned above the grille, and the headlights were placed independently below it. The rear end featured a lightbar forming a wide "H" shape, resembling the new Hyundai Santa Fe. While the side profile remained similar to the 2023 model, the Sonata's design was clearly influenced by the Hyundai Ioniq 6, albeit without its more polarizing elements.

Inside, the Sonata's dash was redesigned with vents flowing across and a centre console extending forward. The gear shifter moved to the steering column, and the steering wheel was redesigned with a T-shape and a slender rim. The Preferred-Trend trim offered a basic black interior with leather upholstery, while the N Line trim featured a light grey option with Nappa leather, suede inserts, and red accents. The Sonata provided competitive space and flexibility, with a panoramic moonroof enhancing the headroom.

Performance

2023 Nissan Versa

7/10

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Versa was equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine producing 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. While not a performance powerhouse, the Versa's engine was satisfactory for daily driving, and the CVT was responsive. The handling was characterized by noticeable body roll but impressive grip, providing a reassuring feel. The steering was fairly responsive, adding to the nimbleness of the sedan. The ride was comfortable, with the suspension effectively cushioning impacts, and cabin noise levels were lower than expected.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid introduced an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the first time, available on the Preferred-Trend trim for an additional $2,000. The Preferred-Trend trim featured a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The N Line trim offered a turbocharged version of the same engine, delivering 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, with power transferred via an 8-speed wet-clutch dual-clutch transmission. The Sonata's steering feel and handling were praised, and the configurable driver-information display added to the driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Nissan Versa

7/10

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Versa was available only as a four-door sedan, offering 416 litres of trunk space in the base S form and 425 litres in the SV and SR trims. This was more cargo space than the similarly sized Kia Rio sedan. The SV and SR trims included a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The front seats provided more headroom and legroom than the Kia, although the rear-seat space was slightly less. The front row felt spacious, with good outward visibility aided by a low dashboard and side glass. However, storage space for small items was limited, with the centre console bin being quite small.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offered competitive interior space, with 975 millimetres of front-seat headroom and 950 millimetres of rear-seat headroom. The front row was prioritized with 1,170 millimetres of legroom, while the rear-seat passengers had 885 millimetres. Heated and ventilated front seats were standard in the Preferred-Trend trim, with the N Line featuring sport seats. The slimmer rim of the steering wheel was appreciated for comfort. The trunk close button was a neat convenience feature, although its necessity in a sedan was debatable.

Technology

2023 Nissan Versa

6/10

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Versa's base S trim included a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, Siri Eyes Free, three USB ports, and keyless entry. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available on the SV and SR trims, along with NissanConnect Services telematics. The SV trim added a 7-inch driver-information display and a wireless phone charging pad, while the SR featured an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a six-speaker audio system. Despite the tech features, the Versa's touchscreens were small, and the graphics were outdated. The digital instrument cluster display added a touch of sophistication, and a charging indicator light was a practical addition.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid featured a selectable functionality for the driver's side front USB-C port, allowing it to switch between data-transmitting and charging-only modes. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard on all trims. The Sonata sported a curved display combining the infotainment touchscreen and driver-information display. The N Line had a pair of 12.3-inch screens, while the Preferred-Trend trim had a smaller digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system included logical and intuitive haptic "buttons" for climate control and media functions. The N Line offered navigation and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, while a six-speaker sound system was standard.

Safety

2023 Nissan Versa

7/10

2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Versa exceeded expectations with its standard driver-assist tech. The base S trim included automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, lane-departure warning, and high beam assist. The SV trim added blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver attention alert. The NHTSA awarded the Versa a five-star overall safety rating, with five stars in side-impact crash testing and four stars in the frontal and rollover categories.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid came with blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance assist, forward collision-avoidance assist with junction turning detection, safe exit warning and assist, lane-following and lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, automatic emergency braking, and rear occupant alert. Hyundai's infotainment system made it easy to find and manage safety features, with clear graphics explaining each function.
