Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer nameplate to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colours, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

Reviews Summary

Designed for Europe’s narrow city streets and tight parking spaces, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB aims to maximize utility in an SUV that is minimally sized. The result is a boxy vehicle emphasizing practicality over style, offering seating for up to seven people and a base price under $50,000 combined with the performance, technology, and luxury upgrades you expect in a Mercedes.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

5/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB was positioned between the GLA and GLC in the automaker's SUV lineup, offering both the GLB250 and AMG GLB35 specifications. In Canada, the GLB250 came standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the AMG GLB35 boasted a more powerful drivetrain and sophisticated AWD system. The GLB's design was somewhat polarizing, with its steep windshield angle and nearly vertical rear window, but the AMG GLB35's 21-inch multi-spoke wheels added a touch of style. Inside, the GLB's cabin was a visual treat, featuring high-definition displays and ambient lighting. However, the controls required some acclimation, and the road noise was notably loud, especially with the optional 21-inch wheels.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer resembled a mini version of the Chevrolet Blazer, exuding SUV toughness without appearing exaggerated. The Activ and RS models offered unique styling elements, with the Activ featuring a rugged look and the RS adopting a sportier appearance. The Trailblazer's interior, while not screaming "outdoor adventure," had distinctive design touches like grab handles and a creased dashboard. The cabin featured a mix of leatherette upholstery and copper-toned trim, adding personality to the otherwise black interior. Despite its compact size, the Trailblazer managed to offer a comfortable and stylish experience.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-4-cylinder engine, with the AMG GLB35 version producing 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The AMG GLB35 was equipped with an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD, and an AMG Sport Exhaust system. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, with a fuel consumption rating of 11.2 L/100 km in combined driving. The AMG GLB35 emphasized performance, with a firm ride and responsive handling, especially in Sport+ mode. However, it could be finicky in urban settings, with some throttle lag and a firm ride.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform and powertrains with the Buick Encore GX, offering a standard 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. An optional 1.3-litre turbo-three increased output to 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. The Trailblazer Activ test car had AWD, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and the 1.3-litre engine. The Trailblazer exhibited body roll typical of high-riding vehicles but felt composed and nimble. The ride quality was generally good, though some bouncing was noticed over road imperfections. The selectable AWD system required manual engagement, unlike competitor systems that did so automatically.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered a spacious interior for a small SUV, with an optional third-row seat suitable for children. Standard features included dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The GLB's cargo area provided 560 litres of space, expandable to 1,755 litres with the second-row seat folded. The third-row seat reduced storage space and was less practical for North American buyers. The GLB's design allowed for easy entry and exit, with comfortable seating for two adults in the rear.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite being one of the smallest SUVs, offered decent utility with generous headroom and mid-pack legroom. The Trailblazer's cargo space measured 716 litres with the second-row seats in place and 1,540 litres with them folded. While the Trailblazer's cargo capacity was respectable, it was behind some competitors like the Kia Seltos. The Trailblazer's interior featured smart storage solutions, including a covered storage bin, deep tray, and cupholders. However, the relatively flat rear seat cushions made long road trips less appealing.

Technology

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured the MBUX infotainment system, with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and touchscreen. While Bluetooth was standard, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were optional in Canada. The Premium Package added SiriusXM satellite radio, and the Navigation Package included a navigation system. MBUX offered natural voice recognition and a digital assistant, making it user-friendly despite its high-tech appearance. The system responded well to prompts, though it occasionally recommended non-hospital medical facilities.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. An 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a Bose audio system were optional. The Trailblazer's infotainment system was adequate for most buyers, with logical menus and easy-to-read graphics. The combination of a smaller instrument cluster screen and analog gauges effectively conveyed information, aided by smart design touches like a person-shaped icon for pedestrian detection.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB test vehicle lacked the optional Driver Assistance Package, which included 12 advanced safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance. Standard safety features included Active Brake Assist, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and an Attention Assist driver monitoring system. Crash-test ratings for the GLB were unavailable.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer came with standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a Teen Driver system. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The Trailblazer received a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with high marks for crash prevention tech.
