Reviews Summary

The redesigned 2026 Audi A6 marks the ninth generation of midsize luxury sedans from Ingolstadt, Germany. While it shares a name and some tech features with the Audi A6 e-tron introduced for the 2025 model year, the gasoline A6 is an otherwise different vehicle based on the same Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) as the A5 sedan and Q5 crossover. A redesign was certainly needed as most other midsize luxury sedans—specifically the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class—were renewed more recently, and we haven’t had a genuinely new A6 since the 2020 model year.

Verdict: On paper, the A6 looks like more of a premium product than before, but it doesn’t feel that way from behind the wheel, and the tech is a work in progress.

Reviews Summary

Compact sedans are some of the most affordable vehicles today, which often leads to cheaper interiors, disappointing performance, and uninspired styling. The 2026 Mazda3 bucks that trend with a cabin that could easily be mistaken for entry-level luxury fare, a spirited driving experience, and head-turning style. The current-generation Mazda3 debuted as a 2019 model, but despite its age few updates are expected for 2026.

Verdict: The Mazda3 proves that small cars don’t have to be boring.

Look and feel

2026 Audi A6

8/10

2026 Mazda MAZDA3

7/10

The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3 presented a refined exterior design that echoed the elegance of its siblings, the MX-5 and CX-5. Its front fascia was dominated by a large polygonal grille with a metallic frame that seamlessly integrated with narrow headlights, offering a sophisticated appearance. The side profile was distinguished by gracefully sculpted panels and a metallic strip tracing the windows, creating a sporty illusion of a lower ride height. The rear end maintained a harmonious design, avoiding flashy elements, while the Sport hatchback variant added a muscular stance. Inside, the Mazda3's cabin rivalled entry-level luxury vehicles with its tastefully designed dashboard, soft-touch surfaces, and genuine stitching, although the top-most door panel section fell slightly short in material quality.

The 2026 Audi A6, while not as visually striking as some competitors, maintained a handsome appearance with its trademark “singleframe” grille and Quattro-inspired fender flares. The LED headlights featured a pixelated effect with programmable signatures, and the taillights were repositioned to accommodate programmable lights. The A6 was available in base, Progressiv, and Technik trims, with the Technik trim offering a sportier appearance through the S Line Black package. Despite its sporty exterior, the interior materials were disappointingly bland, lacking the premium feel expected in this class. The A6's lighting features and overall design were more subdued compared to its rivals, but it offered a stable and composed driving experience.

Performance

2026 Audi A6

8/10

2026 Mazda MAZDA3

7/10

The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3 offered two drivetrain options. The standard engine, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, delivered 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Mazda3 Sport hatchback also offered a six-speed manual option. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available on GS and GT trims. The optional Turbo engine on the GT trim increased output to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel. The base engine's performance was adequate, reaching 100 km/h in about 8.5 seconds, while the Turbo engine achieved the same in 6.5 seconds. The Mazda3's i-Activ AWD system enhanced traction and handling, making it a standout choice for driving enthusiasts. Despite its sporty handling, the Mazda3 maintained a comfortable ride, with moderate road noise and wind flutter at highway speeds.

The 2026 Audi A6 featured a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, producing 362 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive. This engine, shared with the S5 sedan, allowed the A6 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, outperforming base models of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. The A6's power delivery was energetic, though the transmission exhibited hesitation under heavy throttle. The Sport Plus package added chassis enhancements, including brake-based torque vectoring and a sport rear differential, improving handling. However, the steel-spring suspension in the Sport Plus package compromised ride quality. The A6's steering system provided precision, but the overall driving experience was better suited for highway cruising than spirited driving.

Form and function

2026 Audi A6

5/10

2026 Mazda MAZDA3

8/10

The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3 offered stylish design and performance but lacked practicality. The front seats provided ample space for taller occupants, while the rear seats were cramped for average-sized adults. The hatchback's thicker rear roof pillars created blind spots, and the limited rear space was a drawback for families with children. The sedan's trunk offered 374 litres of cargo space, with a flat load floor and remote seatback releases. The hatchback provided more versatility with 569 litres of cargo space, but personal item storage was limited.

The 2026 Audi A6, six centimetres longer than its predecessor, maintained the same wheelbase, resulting in no significant increase in passenger space. The panoramic glass roof added front-seat headroom, but rear-seat headroom and legroom remained unchanged. The A6 offered comparable space to the BMW 5 Series, with heated rear seats and climate controls. The conventional trunk provided 382 litres of cargo space, more than the Cadillac CT5 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but less than the 5 Series. The A6's interior featured comfortable sport seats with a balance of bolstering and cushioning.

Technology

2026 Mazda MAZDA3

7/10

The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3's infotainment system was user-friendly but lacked advanced features. The standard 8.8-inch display was not a touchscreen, controlled by a dial on the centre console. Higher trims offered a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a wireless charging pad. The system's intuitive menus and quick reactions made it easy to use, but the standard eight-speaker audio system was underwhelming. The top GT trim offered a 12-speaker Bose audio system. The Mazda3 also featured remote monitoring and control via the Mazda Connect app, with Alexa Built-in on the GT trim.

The 2026 Audi A6 introduced the Digital Stage setup with an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch touchscreen. An optional 10.9-inch front-passenger touchscreen addressed the main screen's driver-oriented tilt. The MMI infotainment system's oversimplified layouts and small text were drawbacks, though improved voice recognition and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard. Audi planned a mid-year interface upgrade, adding an integrated dashcam and a new steering wheel. The optional Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system featured headrest speakers for navigation directions.

Safety

2026 Mazda MAZDA3

6/10

The 2026 Mazda MAZDA3 received top safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS, earning a five-star rating and Top Safety Pick+ award, respectively. Standard i-Activsense features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, a driver condition monitor, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross-traffic alert. The GT model added adaptive headlights, a head-up display, lane centring, a surround-view camera system, and reverse automatic braking. The adaptive cruise control's delayed reactions were a concern, but overall, the safety systems performed well.

The 2026 Audi A6 came standard with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitors, traffic sign recognition, parking sensors, and lane departure warning. The lane centring feature allowed some lane wobble, but robust driver monitoring was included. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were unavailable at the time of writing, typical for a new model year.
