Reviews Summary

Decades ago, few cars were anywhere near as fuel efficient as the Toyota Prius. Today, the 2025 Prius remains a fuel economy champion, but numerous alternatives are close. Some even offer more interior room at a lower price. That reality, coupled with the cramped interior, limited trunk space, and general weirdness of the Prius, means hybrid car buyers have options.

Verdict: The point of the 2025 Toyota Prius is fuel economy, but our test car averaged 6.0 litres per 100 kilometres, falling significantly short of the Natural Resources Canada estimate of 4.8 L/100 km in combined driving. That certainly isn’t superior to roomier hybrid cars from Honda, Hyundai, or from within Toyota’s own lineup.

Reviews Summary

The redesigned 2026 Audi A6 marks the ninth generation of midsize luxury sedans from Ingolstadt, Germany. While it shares a name and some tech features with the Audi A6 e-tron introduced for the 2025 model year, the gasoline A6 is an otherwise different vehicle based on the same Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) as the A5 sedan and Q5 crossover. A redesign was certainly needed as most other midsize luxury sedans—specifically the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class—were renewed more recently, and we haven’t had a genuinely new A6 since the 2020 model year.

Verdict: On paper, the A6 looks like more of a premium product than before, but it doesn’t feel that way from behind the wheel, and the tech is a work in progress.

2025 Toyota Prius

7/10

2026 Audi A6

7/10

The 2025 Toyota Prius marked a significant shift in design, making the hybrid more visually appealing than its predecessors. Retaining its iconic boomerang-shaped profile, the Prius adopted futuristic and aerodynamic styling details that enhanced its attractiveness. In Canada, the Prius was offered in XLE and Limited trims, with prices ranging from $41,209 to $47,324, including a destination charge. The model featured standard all-wheel drive and offered plug-in hybrid versions with up to 72 kilometres of electric-only driving. Despite its low stance, which made entry and exit akin to a sports car, the Prius provided adequate visibility and a mix of materials inside, including hard plastics and Toyota SofTex artificial leather. The Limited trim boasted a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, adding a modern touch to the minimalist interior.

The 2026 Audi A6, while not as visually striking as some competitors, maintained a handsome appearance with its trademark "singleframe" grille and Quattro-inspired fender flares. The A6 featured innovative lighting with programmable LED headlights and taillights, although some symbols were confusingly similar. Available in base, Progressiv, and Technik trims, the A6 offered a sedan-only design, with the previous-generation RS 6 Avant wagon still available. The Technik trim's S Line Black package added sporty elements like a sportier front bumper and dark chrome 20-inch wheels. Despite these enhancements, the interior materials felt disappointingly bland, lacking the premium feel expected in a luxury sedan.

The 2025 Toyota Prius featured a hybrid powertrain with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder gas engine, an 83-kilowatt electric motor on the front axle, and a 30-kW electric motor at the rear, delivering a total of 196 horsepower. Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture, the Prius offered a lower centre of gravity and responsive handling. With its electric assist motor, the Prius was agile, easily reaching highway speeds and navigating traffic. The ride and handling were commendable, with good grip from the 19-inch wheels and tires. However, wind noise was noticeable on the highway, and visibility was challenging in urban settings. The Prius achieved a fuel economy rating of 4.8 L/100 km combined, though real-world testing showed a higher average of 6.0 L/100 km.

The 2026 Audi A6 was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, producing 362 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive. This setup allowed the A6 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, outperforming base models of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. The A6's power delivery was energetic, though the transmission exhibited hesitation under heavy throttle. The Sport Plus package added features like brake-based torque vectoring and a sport rear differential, enhancing handling. However, the steel-spring suspension in the Sport Plus package compromised ride quality compared to the standard adaptive air suspension. The A6 excelled in highway stability but was less suited for dynamic driving.

Form and function

The 2025 Toyota Prius offered a dual-panel glass roof in the Limited trim, which brightened the interior but did not open like a traditional sunroof. The interior featured an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Despite its comfort, the Prius's low stance made entry and exit challenging. Rear seat space was snug, with limited headroom and no rear climate-control vents. Storage was decent, with various bins and slots, and the Prius provided 575 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat, though this seemed optimistic compared to the Camry Hybrid's trunk.

The 2026 Audi A6, six centimetres longer than its predecessor, maintained the same wheelbase, resulting in no significant increase in passenger space. The panoramic glass roof improved front-seat headroom, while rear seat dimensions remained similar. The A6 offered comparable space to the BMW 5 Series, with heated rear seats and climate controls. The trunk provided 382 litres of cargo space, more than a CT5 or E-Class but less than the 5 Series. The A6 retained a conventional trunk design with 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats for added versatility.

Technology

The 2025 Toyota Prius came with a Toyota Audio Multimedia system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen on the XLE trim and a 12.3-inch touchscreen on the Limited. Both systems supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and various connected services. The Drive Connect subscription enhanced the system with navigation, a digital voice assistant, and concierge access. While the voice assistant was responsive, the six-speaker stereo in the XLE trim was underwhelming.

The 2026 Audi A6 introduced the Digital Stage setup, with an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch touchscreen. An optional 10.9-inch front-passenger touchscreen addressed the main screen's driver-oriented tilt. The MMI infotainment system, though improved in voice recognition, suffered from oversimplified layouts and inconvenient pop-up menus. An interface update was planned for mid-year, adding features like an integrated dashcam. The optional Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system featured headrest speakers for navigation directions.

Safety

The 2025 Toyota Prius included Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, offering features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera system were also available. The Prius earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA, confirming its safety credentials.

The 2026 Audi A6 came with standard driver-assist features, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitors. However, the lane centring feature allowed for some lane wobble. Robust driver monitoring was included, but crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were unavailable at the time of writing.
