2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior update that might have gone unnoticed by many. The changes were minor, with the most noticeable being the clever Mercedes star logos on the front grille and slight modifications to the headlights and taillights. The standard LED headlights and optional multi-beam LED headlights added a touch of modernity. The GLE 450e test vehicle, finished in Twilight Blue metallic and equipped with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, presented a handsome appearance. Inside, the GLE 450e exuded luxury with its Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The interior offered a variety of choices, including 10 interior colour options and five trims, making it one of the highest quality cabins in its segment.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution from Volvo's past designs. The XC90's purposeful yet understated front end, assertive grille, and distinctive "Thor’s Hammer" headlights marked a departure from the boxy designs of the past. The XC90's dimensions leaned toward a rectilinear shape, but it was far from resembling a toaster. The test vehicle, in Ultimate trim, featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Grey paint with brown undertones, adding richness to its appearance. Inside, the XC90's elegant design included a two-tone leather steering wheel, metal Bowers and Wilkins speaker covers, an Orrefors crystal shift knob, and luxurious Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist interior design, with wood deco inlays, created a clean and beautiful look.

Performance

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains to suit various preferences, with a starting price of approximately $82,800. The lineup included the GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic, AMG GLE 53 4Matic+, and the GLE 450e PHEV. The GLE 450e, with its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor, delivered a combined output of 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in about 5.5 seconds. The GLE 450e's fuel economy was estimated at 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, with a range of 77 kilometres on electric power alone. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE's sophisticated steering made it feel maneuverable despite its size.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced the B6 engine, a mild-hybrid powertrain that replaced the older T5 and T6 engines. The B6 engine, with its supercharger and turbo, produced 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. While the fuel economy benefits were minimal, the mild-hybrid technology contributed to smoother operation. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission performed well, and the vehicle's road and wind noise were kept at bay. The XC90's brakes inspired confidence with their solid pedal feel. Although the XC90 lacked extensive customizable driving dynamics, it offered a straightforward and enjoyable driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for passengers, with generous headroom and legroom in both the first and second rows. The cabin's light beige upholstery contributed to a light and airy feel, and outward visibility was excellent. The GLE offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive in its class. The optional third-row seat was limited to the GLE 350 and GLE 450 trims and was suitable only for young children. The GLE 450e came equipped with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. Additional features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's interior design was elegant, but its Scandinavian minimalism led to some space and storage frustrations. The XC90 lacked dedicated space for smaller items, and the USB port for phone charging was located in the small centre console bin. The second row was comfortable and spacious, but accessing the third row was challenging. With the third-row seats in place, the XC90 offered 356 litres of cargo space, which expanded to 1,183 litres with the third row folded. The XC90's cargo capacity fell short compared to some competitors. Despite its smaller size, the XC90 drove like a smaller car, offering a pleasant driving experience.

Technology

2023 Volvo XC90

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens. The system was user-friendly but required a learning curve to navigate its various menus. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity and convenience. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel occasionally caused issues, such as unexpected volume changes.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's infotainment system featured a 9-inch vertically positioned touchscreen running Google OS. The system integrated Google Maps, Spotify, NPR, and Google Assistant as standard features. Natural-language recognition was a highlight, and owners could issue commands via Google Home devices. However, the reliance on the touchscreen for key functions led to some frustration. The XC90 lacked physical buttons for certain features, such as the heated steering wheel and seat adjustments. Keyless entry was standard, and a head-up display was optional.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came equipped with a comprehensive lineup of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and pedestrian detection. Optional features included active blind-spot assist, active lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS based on the 2022 model year.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for its safety features, earning a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS.
