2023 Honda HR-V Reviews Summary

Honda’s subcompact SUV gets a makeover inside and out. Previously based on the Fit, the new HR-V shares the global architecture that also underpins the Civic.

Honda continues to narrow trim options: There were once as many as five, but the Touring trim level got the axe after the 2022 model year. The three trims for 2023 are LX, Sport, and EX-L. We drove the top trim, EX-L, through a mountainous test course.

New styling plus the newly standard Honda Sensing suite of safety features put this latest HR-V back at the front of the pack it led when it debuted in 2016.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

Look and feel

2023 Honda HR-V

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Honda HR-V underwent a significant styling transformation, shedding some of its previous quirky charm for a more sophisticated and modern appearance. The lowered beltline and simplified detailing contributed to a sleeker look, with cleaner lines and fewer interruptions. The windshield wipers were discreetly tucked under the hood's lip, and the black molding strips on the roof were removed. The HR-V was available in new colours, including a dusky grey-green called Nordic Forest Pearl. The EX-L trim featured perforated leather seats with additional shoulder support, enhancing the cabin's comfort. However, the eight-way power driver's seat was unavailable in Canada due to supply shortages. The interior design followed the refinement trend set by the 2022 Civic, with premium touches like a metal honeycomb grille and touch-sensitive lights. Despite the fastback design, visibility remained excellent, with larger rear seat windows and door-mounted mirrors.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler maintained its rugged, no-nonsense design with its fourth-generation JL model. The Wrangler's boxy shape and iconic seven-slot grille exuded a take-no-prisoners aesthetic. Available in two-door and four-door configurations, the Wrangler offered the option to remove doors for an open-air experience. The windshield could fold down, and various top options allowed for open-air exploration. The Wrangler's design was simple and functional, with wide fenders, round headlights, and exterior hood latches. The limited-edition "Reign" purple paint colour added a touch of flair to the SUV. Inside, the Wrangler featured easy-to-clean floor mats and seats, with a body-coloured dash and chunky HVAC controls. However, it lacked ambient lighting and massaging seats, focusing on practicality over luxury.

Performance

2023 Honda HR-V

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Honda HR-V featured a single powertrain option: a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. This marked an improvement over the previous model, with an updated continuously variable transmission (CVT) incorporating a Step-Shift function to mimic traditional automatic transmission sounds. The HR-V offered Normal, Snow, and ECON drive modes, with Sport mode available for a more spirited drive. The HR-V's new front and fully independent rear suspensions, along with widened tracks, contributed to a surprisingly enjoyable driving experience on mountain roads. However, it was not overpowered, and competitors like the Kia Seltos and Ford Bronco Sport offered multiple powertrain options, including turbocharged engines.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler excelled in off-road performance, with solid axles front and rear and optional differential lockers. It offered a range of engine options, including the standard Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.0-litre Ecodiesel V6 with 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 horsepower and torque, capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid offered a 17.3-kWh battery pack for 35 kilometres of all-electric range. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by different transfer cases, with the Xtreme Recon package providing a crawl ratio of 58:1. However, the 392 model had issues with brakes and steering, which were not as pronounced in other trims.

Form and function

2023 Honda HR-V

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Honda HR-V, a subcompact SUV, offered a well-thought-out interior with a centre console featuring a shelf for drive mode controls and USB ports. The HR-V's fastback design sacrificed a centimetre of rear-seat headroom, with front headroom measuring 1,002 millimetres and rear headroom at 965.3 millimetres. Cargo space was 691 litres with rear seats up and 1,559 litres with them folded, slightly smaller than the previous model. The HR-V's 60/40 split rear seats provided a higher seating position and a nearly flat floor when folded. Passenger volume varied by trim, with the EX-L offering 2,775 litres and the LX and Sport trims at 2,794 litres. Front legroom improved to 1,064 millimetres, while rear legroom decreased to 958 millimetres.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, with heated options available on select trims. The rear seat could fit three passengers in four-door models, but space was tight, and rear doors were small. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. The Wrangler's cargo space measured 2,050 litres with rear seats folded, slightly less than the Bronco. The hard top could be removed in one piece or with front panels, and the soft top was easy to remove. The Sky One-Touch power soft top offered quick open-air access. The Wrangler provided ample charging points, with USB-A and USB-C ports, 12-volt outlets, and a 115-volt outlet.

Technology

The 2023 Honda HR-V featured a tablet-style touchscreen for its infotainment system, with physical knobs for power and volume. The EX-L trim offered additional buttons for Home, Back, and Seek functions. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard across all trims, with wireless versions available on the EX-L. The EX-L also had a 9-inch infotainment display with Smart Shortcuts and a Qi-compatible wireless charging pad. All HR-Vs included a 7-inch digital gauge cluster and a 7-inch colour touchscreen display. Standard features included three USB-A ports, Bluetooth connectivity, keyless entry, remote start, and a four-speaker audio system, with higher trims offering more speakers and additional features.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen. The system lacked hard buttons, relying on touchscreen icons for various features. Jeep's off-road pages provided information on power distribution, temperatures, oil pressure, pitch and roll, and GPS coordinates. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto were standard. The Wrangler offered practical tech features like a forward-facing camera for off-road trails and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories. However, it lacked advanced tech features like a digital key or over-the-air updates for vehicle performance.

The 2023 Honda HR-V included the Honda Sensing suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard across all trims. This suite featured adaptive cruise control, collision-mitigation braking, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, road-departure mitigation, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. New for 2023 were traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. A blind-spot information system with rear cross-traffic alert was also standard, with front and rear parking sensors on the EX-L trim. The HR-V received a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS, though the NHTSA had not yet rated it.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features included a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control were standard only on the top trims, with an option package available for others. Lane-keeping assist was not offered. The Wrangler's safety features could be customized, with adjustable settings for blind-spot and forward collision warnings. The IIHS ratings for the Wrangler were mixed, with some trims receiving Poor rankings for headlights. The NHTSA gave the Wrangler four out of five stars for frontal crash tests and three out of five for rollover ratings, with no side crash rating available.
