2023 Buick Encore GX Reviews SummaryGeneral Motors has big plans for Buick. The near-luxury division positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac is slated to go all-electric by the end of the decade, with a fresh lineup of EVs highlighted by a new design language. But those new models aren’t scheduled to arrive for a few more years, so for now Buick carries on with a lineup of conventional gasoline crossover SUVs, of which the 2023 Buick Encore GX is the entry-level option. The Encore GX was launched for the 2020 model year as a larger sibling to the Buick Encore, but the standard Encore is being discontinued, leaving only the GX for 2023. It slots below the Envision and Enclave in Buick’s three-model crossover lineup. While Buick is generally considered a step up from mainstream brands, the Encore GX’s size and pricing are more in line with subcompact SUVs from mainstream brands, such as the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30, or the lifted-hatchback Subaru Crosstrek. In fact, the Encore GX shares powertrains and a basic platform with one of these vehicles—the Chevrolet Trailblazer. The only change for 2023 is a new extra-cost Moonstone Gray Metallic paint option. That means the lineup still consists of base Preferred, mid-level Select, and top Essence trim levels. We tested out an Encore GX Essence for this review.
2024 Mazda CX-30 Reviews SummaryIntroduced in 2020 and continually updated and upgraded since then, the CX-30 is Mazda’s smallest crossover SUV. This year, the 2024 CX-30 comes in new a new Suna trim level, adds USB-C charging ports, and is available with a larger infotainment screen featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All CX-30s have standard all-wheel drive (AWD), and you can upgrade to a turbocharged engine for more power and performance. Verdict: Sticking to its corporate traditions with the 2024 CX-30, Mazda delivers style, refinement, safety, and rewarding driving dynamics in the small crossover SUV segment. As expected, rear-seat room and cargo space are tight, but otherwise, the Mazda CX-30 is a delightful little SUV.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX departed from Buick's storied design history, presenting a style that didn't echo the brand's past nor forge a new path. Its rounded exterior and tall stance resulted in awkward proportions that failed to capture the SUV allure that many buyers sought. Even with the optional Sport Touring Package, which added subtle enhancements like different bumpers and a black mesh grille, the changes were barely noticeable unless compared directly to a standard model. Inside, the Encore GX Essence trim offered expected features like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, but the abundance of plastic reminded occupants of its position at the lower end of Buick's lineup. While fit and finish were commendable, the interior design felt reminiscent of outdated 1990s styles, with the instrument cluster being the only standout feature.
In contrast, the 2024 Mazda CX-30 boasted an appealing design, despite the excessive charcoal-coloured plastic on its lower body. Its short overhangs, long hood, and sculpted flanks contributed to a sporty and attractive appearance. Inside, the CX-30 felt a class above, with a refined and stylish interior that rivaled entry-level luxury SUVs. The gauges were clear, and the infotainment screen was seamlessly integrated into the dashboard. The CX-30 offered a choice of two engines, with the Suna trim featuring a turbocharged engine delivering up to 250 hp. The test vehicle's Zircon Sand paint and Terracotta interior upholstery added a unique touch, making it stand out in the SUV segment.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX in Canada came with a 1.3-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. It featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. While the engine's acceleration felt stronger than its specs suggested, power delivery was not smooth, requiring a patient driving approach. The Encore GX excelled in ride comfort and noise reduction, thanks to its well-damped suspension and active noise cancellation. However, it felt ponderous and awkward in most driving situations, with slow and lifeless steering and significant body roll.
The 2024 Mazda CX-30, equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivered 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Despite its power, the CX-30's acceleration was smooth and gradual, akin to riding a wave. The six-speed automatic transmission provided flawless shifting, and the standard all-wheel drive ensured power distribution to all four wheels. While the turbocharged engine's fuel economy was not its strong suit, the CX-30 offered a fun and nimble driving experience, with excellent visibility and standard safety features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The CX-30's performance was further enhanced by its ability to handle challenging terrains with ease.
The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered competitive passenger space, with headroom comparable to rivals like the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30. However, the Kia Seltos provided more rear legroom and cargo space. The Encore GX's cargo capacity was respectable, with 665 litres behind the rear seats and 1,422 litres with them folded. Despite its compact size, the Encore GX featured ample small-item storage, including large door pockets and a space-efficient wireless charging pad. The instrumentation was well-executed, with clear notifications and an array of hard buttons for ease of use.
The 2024 Mazda CX-30's interior showcased deft design, quality materials, and logical controls. The three-gauge, partial digital instrumentation was a highlight, and the traditional PRNDL shifter was user-friendly. While the interior space was cramped, especially in the back seat, the driver and front passenger enjoyed comfort and ease of access. The CX-30 offered adequate storage space, with a flexible cargo hold that could accommodate 572 litres behind the back seat and 1,280 litres with the seats folded. The interior's gloss black trim, metallic accents, and exposed stitching added a touch of elegance.
The 2023 Buick Encore GX featured a standard 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch driver information display. While a built-in navigation system, head-up display, and Bose audio system were optional, the Encore GX came with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with graphics that surpassed many competitors, despite the relatively small screen size.
The 2024 Mazda CX-30 GT and Suna trims boasted a new 10.25-inch infotainment display, offering touchscreen functionality for smartphone mirroring platforms. While the screen's placement was less than ideal, the system aimed to reduce driver distraction through a combination of controls. The CX-30 included a two-year subscription to Mazda Connected Services, new USB-C ports, a wireless smartphone charger, and a Bose premium audio system, enhancing its technological appeal.
The 2023 Buick Encore GX came with standard driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and a Teen Driver system. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. The Encore GX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS 2022 Top Safety Pick, with top "Good" ratings in crash tests.
The 2024 Mazda CX-30 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims added adaptive headlights, parking sensors, and a traffic jam assist system. The CX-30 earned a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, ensuring peace of mind for drivers.
