2022 Mazda CX-30 Reviews Summary

As a brand, Mazda has been punching above its weight for well over a decade now. Whether it’s the three-row CX-9 SUV or Mazda3 compact car, you can expect a higher-quality interior and a more refined ride than respective rivals in a given segment. This is no different for the 2022 Mazda CX-30.

The CX-30 is a subcompact crossover SUV introduced as a 2020 model, supplementing the similar-sized Mazda CX-3. It carries over to the 2022 model year, just as the CX-3 has been discontinued. The CX-30 addresses the shortcomings of the CX-3 without losing any of that crossover’s positive attributes. The CX-30 has a more spacious cabin than the CX-3, but retains the fun-to-drive nature, and has an even more upscale cabin. Read on to learn how Mazda’s new subcompact SUV stands out within this popular vehicle segment.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

Look and feel

2022 Mazda CX-30

10/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 was reminiscent of a smaller CX-5, featuring an upright grille and smooth, flowing fenders. Built on the same platform as the Mazda3, it was essentially a raised version of the Mazda3 hatchback. The CX-30's raked windshield acted like a greenhouse on sunny days, potentially causing distractions for taller drivers due to its slight curve. Inside, the cabin was both comfortable and quiet, with a solid feel to all components. The interior design was one of the best among affordable cars, blending conventional and digital displays artfully. However, the infotainment system, while attractive, had a steep learning curve.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE received a subtle exterior makeover that might have gone unnoticed by many. The front grille featured clever Mercedes star logos, and changes to the headlights and taillights were minimal. The GLE 450e test model, finished in Twilight Blue metallic with 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels, was particularly striking. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. The interior offered a choice of 10 colours and five trims, making it one of the highest quality cabins in its segment.

Performance

2022 Mazda CX-30

8/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 offered a range of engines, starting with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque in the GX trim. The GS and GT trims featured a 2.5-litre engine with 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The test model boasted a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on 87 octane fuel, and 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft on 93 octane. The six-speed automatic transmission routed power to all four wheels. The CX-30's sporty ride was complemented by well-weighted steering and quick turn-in, though it had a rough ride over potholes.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a variety of powertrains, including turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines. The GLE 450e, with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder and electric motor, produced a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission provided seamless gear changes, and the GLE 450e accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds. The estimated fuel economy was 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode. The GLE 450e's electric mode allowed for silent highway driving at speeds up to 140 km/h. The suspension absorbed bumps effortlessly, and the steering made the GLE feel maneuverable despite its size.

Form and function

2022 Mazda CX-30

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 offered up to 1,280 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded, and 572 litres with the seats in use. The GT grade featured a power rear liftgate. The front seats had a sliding centre console cover, though it could get stuck when the rear seats were folded. The rear seats provided decent headroom for short-to-medium trips but lacked the space of larger models like the CX-5.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for adults in both the first and second rows, with generous headroom and legroom. The cabin felt light and airy, aided by the light beige upholstery. The GLE offered 630 litres of cargo space behind the second row, which was competitive with rivals. The optional third-row seat was limited to certain trims and was suitable only for young children. Comfort features included power-adjustable heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. The GLE 450e test model was equipped with numerous luxury features, enhancing the overall experience.

Technology

2022 Mazda CX-30

6/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 featured an elegant dash design with an infotainment screen nestled into the dash. Controlled by a rotary dial and toggle buttons, the system lacked touch functionality, which was a drawback. The setup was inspired by older luxury-car systems like BMW's iDrive, which had been criticized for usability. Navigating between presets and using Apple CarPlay was cumbersome, making the system frustrating even after familiarization.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE's MBUX infotainment system featured dual 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and main touchscreen. The system could be controlled via touch, a control pad, or touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with an improved "Hey Mercedes" voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. However, the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls could inadvertently adjust the volume, which was a minor annoyance.

Safety

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-30 offered several driver-assistance features, though many were not standard in Canada. Available features included forward collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Standard features included rain-sensing wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The CX-30 earned a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE came with a comprehensive lineup of active safety features, including blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included active lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control. The GLE received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS based on the 2022 model year, though crash tests for the 2024 model were not yet completed.
