2023 BMW X1 Reviews Summary

The all-new, third-generation X1 subcompact crossover is zippy and fun enough to be worthy of the distinction, but with new capability and plenty of cargo space, it’s bringing the utility, too.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. It’s been the number one seller for the brand in Canada for years, even before Nissan redesigned the Rogue two years ago. Last year, Nissan added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

Look and feel

2023 BMW X1

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2023 BMW X1 presented itself as a refined evolution of its predecessor, maintaining its recognizable X1 identity while enhancing its robustness and sophistication. The larger, squarer kidney grille was a subtle yet assertive update, and the flush door handles, standard LED headlights, and reimagined L-shaped taillights added to its modern appeal. The colour palette expanded significantly, offering dynamic new options like Blue Bay Lagoon and Utah Orange, with our test model showcasing the striking Portimao Blue. The introduction of 20-inch wheels as an option, wrapped in performance tires, further emphasized the X1's sporty character. Inside, the cabin exuded a premium feel with the BMW Curved Display dominating the dashboard, complemented by SensaTec 2.0 seat coverings and a sophisticated interior design. The M Sport Package added sporty elements like bolstered seats and an M leather steering wheel, while the Premium Essential Package enhanced comfort with features like a panoramic moonroof.

In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Rogue maintained a conservative yet appealing design, with its chiseled styling and SUV detailing conveying a rugged purpose. The Rogue lineup offered various trims, with our test vehicle in the Platinum trim showcasing upscale features like diamond-pattern leather seats and a comprehensive list of amenities. The interior was spacious, accommodating four adults comfortably, though the rear seat comfort was less impressive compared to the front. The Rogue's practicality shone through with features like a hands-free power liftgate and the Divide-N-Hide cargo system, offering versatile storage solutions. However, the design of the key fob and some interior elements lacked thoughtfulness, detracting from the overall user experience.

Performance

2023 BMW X1

9/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 BMW X1 received a notable power boost with its 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder engine, now producing 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This increase allowed the X1 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and tow up to 1,587 kilograms, a first for the model. The new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission enhanced the driving experience, offering smooth shifts and engaging paddle shifters with the M Sport Package. The Adaptive M Suspension and damping systems provided a comfortable yet agile ride, with minimal body roll even during cornering. The X1's fuel economy was rated at 9.6 L/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the highway, with Premium fuel recommended.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, featured a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with variable compression technology, delivering 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. The CVT transmission, while generally unobtrusive, occasionally exhibited dramatic simulated gear changes. The Rogue's performance was responsive in urban settings, but it lacked passing power on the highway. The fuel economy was rated at 7.7 L/100 km combined, though our test vehicle averaged 8.1 L/100 km. The Rogue's ride quality was enhanced by Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control, though it exhibited more body motion on uneven roads. The steering felt lifeless, but the overall handling was secure and consistent.

Form and function

2023 BMW X1

9/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 BMW X1 offered impressive interior space, with headroom measuring 1,069 mm in the front and 998 mm in the rear, surpassing competitors like the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40. Front-row legroom was 1,026 mm, while the rear offered 939 mm. Cargo space was generous, with 727 litres behind the rear seats and 1,619 litres with them folded. However, heated seats were an optional feature, bundled with the Premium Essential Package. The wireless charging pad was cleverly designed to secure the phone during spirited driving.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue provided a practical alternative to a midsize car, with easy entry and exit, good visibility, and a spacious cargo area. The Platinum trim featured premium leather upholstery and a triple-zone climate control system. The front seats were comfortable, though the rear seats lacked support. The Rogue's rear doors opened wide, facilitating easy access, and the cargo area offered up to 1,028 litres of space with the moonroof installed. The Divide-N-Hide system allowed for versatile cargo configurations, though some storage areas were unlined, potentially causing noise.

Technology

2023 BMW X1

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 BMW X1 featured the BMW Curved Display with iDrive 8, integrating a 10.7-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch driver display. The system was responsive, though cluttered with apps. Voice commands worked well for basic functions, but navigation required precise inputs. The X1 included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system available. The vehicle operated with a start/stop button and a toggle-style gear selector, with automatic parking features.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or optional 9-inch touchscreen. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, offering Bluetooth, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wired Android Auto. The voice recognition struggled with complex commands, and the navigation system was limited. The Rogue also featured a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display, both functioning well despite challenging weather conditions.

Safety

2023 BMW X1

7/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 BMW X1 came standard with active blind-spot monitoring, front-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and optional Driving Assistant Professional. This suite included adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a 360-degree camera system. The X1 also offered Active Park Distance Control and Back-Up Assistant for enhanced parking assistance.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue boasted a comprehensive suite of safety features, including 10 airbags, Safety Shield 360, and ProPilot Assist with Navi-link. The latter combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance, performing well during our test. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it received lower scores in specific crash tests.
