2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

If it’s true that styling is what ultimately sells a person on a new vehicle, then the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is poised for success. Volkswagen doesn’t fiddle with the Cross Sport formula for the 2022 model year, aside from adding standard digital instrumentation and bolting bigger 21-inch wheels to the top-of-the-line Execline, the US equivalent of which is shown in the accompanying photos. Those wheels, a Pure Grey paint job, and red leather seat inserts made our test vehicle look terrific.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the Volvo XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

Look and feel

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

8/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was crafted by removing the third row from the standard Atlas model, lowering the roofline by nearly 6 centimetres, and shortening the SUV’s length by 13.2 cm. Despite these changes, the wheelbase remained the same, ensuring a spacious interior for five passengers. However, the reduced cargo space, with 1,141 litres behind the second-row seat and a maximum of 2,203 litres, was a trade-off for its sporty, coupe-like appearance. The Execline trim, with its 21-inch machined-finish wheels, emphasized the vehicle's bold and upscale look, although the base Comfortline trim's 18-inch wheels seemed undersized. The interior offered various colour combinations, but the presence of hard, glossy plastics detracted from the overall quality feel. The Atlas Cross Sport Execline was priced at $56,595 in Canada, offering a stylish alternative to the standard Atlas.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution from Volvo's past designs, moving away from the boxy shapes of the 1980s and 90s. The XC90 presented a purposeful yet understated front end, with a bold grille and distinctive “Thor’s Hammer” headlights. The Ultimate trim featured 21-inch wheels and a Platinum Grey paint with rich undertones. Inside, the XC90 exuded elegance with two-tone leather, metal speaker covers, and Nappa leather upholstery. The minimalist design was complemented by wood deco inlays, creating a clean and sophisticated cabin. Despite its rectilinear dimensions, the XC90 was far from the toasters of old, offering a modern and refined aesthetic.

Performance

2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

6/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered two engine options: a standard turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and an available 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. The V6 engine, which did not require premium fuel, provided a more satisfying driving experience and a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The V6 engine in the Execline trim delivered a more energetic performance compared to the three-row Atlas, although it lacked refinement and averaged 12.3 L/100 km in fuel consumption. The suspension tuning was criticized for being too firm at low speeds and too soft at higher speeds, affecting ride quality. The Atlas Cross Sport excelled in highway driving, but road noise was more intrusive than expected.

For the 2023 Volvo XC90, Volvo introduced the B6 engine, a mild-hybrid version of the previous powertrain, producing 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid technology improved fuel efficiency and smoothness, although the gains were minimal. The B6 powertrain, with its supercharger and turbo, offered a quick acceleration and a seamless eight-speed automatic transmission. The XC90’s brakes provided a solid pedal feel, and the vehicle handled corners well despite its size. The mild-hybrid system’s auto stop-start technology was nearly imperceptible, enhancing the driving experience. The XC90 lacked extensive off-road capabilities, focusing instead on a straightforward driving experience with minimal drive modes.

Form and function

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport shared its wheelbase and interior dimensions with the larger seven-passenger model, offering exceptional roominess for five adults. The test vehicle featured 10-way power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. A panoramic sunroof added to the spacious feel, while numerous storage spaces were available, albeit unlined, leading to potential rattling noises. The cargo area provided ample space, with deep wells for additional storage, although the shorter length and lower roofline reduced overall cargo capacity compared to the seven-passenger model.

In the 2023 Volvo XC90, the front seats offered a peaceful and pleasant experience, but the minimalist design led to limited storage space for smaller items. The centre console bin was small, and the USB port location was inconvenient for phone charging. The second row was comfortable and spacious, but accessing the third row was challenging, especially with the standard seven-passenger seating. The XC90 offered 356 litres of cargo space with the third row in place, expanding to 1,183 litres with the seats folded, and a maximum of 1,856 litres. Despite its smaller size compared to typical three-row SUVs, the XC90 provided a comfortable driving experience.

Technology

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport came equipped with a digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and wireless charging. The user experience was often frustrating, with issues in touchscreen interaction and voice recognition. The Execline trim included a 12-speaker Fender premium audio system, which was highly praised for its quality.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 featured a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display running Google OS, with integrated Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. The system supported Apple CarPlay, although iPhones were less compatible. The natural-language recognition was a highlight, allowing for voice commands via Google Home devices. However, the reliance on the touchscreen for key functions was a drawback, with a lack of physical buttons leading to potential frustration. Keyless entry was standard, with an optional head-up display.

Safety

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. The Travel Assist system combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assist, although it occasionally lacked refinement. The Execline trim added a semi-autonomous Park Assist system and a 360-degree camera. The Atlas Cross Sport received favourable crash-test ratings, though not the highest accolades from safety organizations.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was renowned for its safety, carrying a five-star rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS. Standard safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. The Pilot Assist technology supported maintaining distance and speed, enhancing the XC90’s reputation as a safe and reliable vehicle.
