2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

Launched for the 2020 model year, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a two-row, five-seat version of the Volkswagen Atlas family crossover, itself a fairly new model, having launched for the 2018 model year.

The two-row midsize crossover segment is experiencing a resurgence, with newer models like the Cross Sport, Toyota Venza, Honda Passport, and Chevrolet Blazer joining the aging Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. VW also named the Jeep Grand Cherokee as a competitor to the Cross Sport, but the Jeep is a more traditional SUV.

Typically for a model entering its sophomore year, the Cross Sport doesn’t get many updates for 2021. The only change is VW’s new MIB3 infotainment system for most trim levels, and two new driver-assist features: Travel Assist and Emergency Assist.

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is available in four trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and Execline. In Canada, 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard while front-wheel drive (FWD) is not offered. The option to choose between the four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines is available on all trims but the base model. Our test car was a U.S. model, the approximate Canadian equivalent being the Execline grade with the six-cylinder engine.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Reviews Summary

The summer of 2022 has been a doozy. Gas prices went sky high and heat waves rolled across the country. If you’re rethinking the purchase of a three-row SUV and trying to find a fuel-efficient solution that emits greenhouse gas emissions only part of the time, the seven-passenger Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid might be a good solution. It doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as other Pacificas do, but it has a plug-in hybrid powertrain supplying a Natural Resources Canada-rated 51 kilometres of electric range before the gasoline V6 engine fires up to deliver 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving.

Look and feel

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

5/10

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

5/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport presented a unique blend of SUV ruggedness and car-like features, with its low roofline and aggressively raked rear hatch. This design choice, reminiscent of luxury automakers' "crossover coupes," resulted in a somewhat awkward aesthetic. The vehicle's exterior was further marred by fake exhaust tips on the rear bumper, which appeared tacky. Despite its shorter and lower stature compared to the seven-seat Atlas, the Cross Sport maintained the same wheelbase, riding on VW’s MQB platform. Standard LED lighting and a range of wheel sizes from 18 to 21 inches, depending on the trim, added to its visual appeal. However, the interior, while minimalist and functional, suffered from subpar materials, with leather upholstery that felt rubbery and an overuse of hard and shiny plastics. The dark colour scheme and flat-bottom steering wheel did little to create a welcoming atmosphere.

In contrast, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, though not a visual standout even with the S Appearance Package, offered a practical and efficient package for transporting up to seven people. The minivan's design was more about function than form, with a focus on utility rather than style. The interior featured quality black Nappa leather, though the overall styling appeared soft and somewhat dated. Despite this, the Pacifica Hybrid's electric-only driving range and plug-in hybrid capabilities made it a unique offering in its segment. The vehicle's pricing, starting at $55,995 for the base model and reaching $64,960 for the Limited trim with options, was offset by available federal and provincial EV rebates, making it a more attractive proposition for those prioritizing efficiency and practicality over aesthetics.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

5/10

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered two powertrain options: a standard 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine and an optional 3.6-litre V6 engine. The turbo-four produced 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the V6 delivered 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6, in particular, provided a livelier acceleration experience, though it lacked midrange punch. The ride quality was less than ideal, with noticeable bumps and potholes, and the cabin allowed in significant wind and tire noise. Despite its "Sport" moniker, the Cross Sport handled more like a truck, with considerable body roll and loose steering. Towing capacity varied between the engines, with the V6 capable of towing up to 2,268 kilograms, while the four-cylinder was limited to 907 kilograms.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, on the other hand, featured a plug-in hybrid drivetrain based on a 3.6-litre V6 engine paired with a dual-motor electric drive system. This setup provided a total system output of 260 horsepower, with immediate torque from the electric drive system. The Pacifica Hybrid excelled in efficiency, offering an electric-only range of up to 51 kilometres, ideal for short commutes and errands. The regenerative braking system further enhanced efficiency, allowing for an average fuel economy of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres. While the Pacifica Hybrid's driving dynamics were not particularly engaging, the powertrain's seamless transition between electric and gasoline modes impressed. The vehicle's ability to handle speed humps at over 50 km/h was noteworthy, though the overall driving experience was more akin to a practical appliance than a thrilling ride.

Form and function

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

9/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport boasted a spacious interior, with front-seat and rear-seat legroom among the best in its class. However, the sloping roofline compromised rear headroom, making it less accommodating for taller passengers. Cargo space was generous, with 1,141 litres available with the rear seats in place and 2,203 litres with them folded. The vehicle featured a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and a range of storage solutions, including a large centre console and a foot-activated tailgate on higher trims.

In comparison, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid excelled in comfort and utility, offering three rows of comfortable seating and substantial cargo space. The interior was equipped with triple-zone automatic climate control, quality leather upholstery, and a range of storage options, including a large floor tray and multiple bins. The second-row seats were more comfortable than those in a standard Pacifica, though they did not offer the same Stow n’ Go functionality. The third-row seat provided reasonable comfort, with ample amenities for passengers. Cargo space was impressive, with 914 litres behind the third row and up to 3,978 litres with the second-row seats removed, surpassing many full-size SUVs in capacity.

Technology

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered two infotainment systems, with the MIB3 system available on higher trims. This system featured an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system. However, the system was slow to load, and the voice recognition required specific prompts. The Digital Cockpit display was a highlight, providing a customizable instrument cluster.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid came equipped with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen with appealing graphics and a user-friendly interface. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a FamCam overhead camera system for monitoring rear passengers. While the voice recognition technology was inconsistent, the available 20-speaker Harman Kardon sound system offered a premium audio experience. The Pacifica Hybrid also featured Amazon Fire TV for rear-seat entertainment, though personal devices were often preferred by passengers.

Safety

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

7/10

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport received top "Good" scores in IIHS crash tests, with mixed headlight ratings. It earned a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with standard safety features including forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. The Cross Sport also offered unique features like the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System.

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid claimed to offer more standard safety features than any other vehicle in the industry. It included a rear-seat reminder system and a comprehensive package of driver-assist features. However, the adaptive cruise control required refinement. The Pacifica earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with a four-star rating for frontal-impact protection.
