2022 Toyota 4Runner Reviews Summary

Family-hauling, kid-toting three-row SUVs have become the de facto vehicle in most suburban towns. Just look in any mall parking lot, and you’re bound to see countless Honda Pilots and Toyota Highlanders. So ubiquitous are these vehicles, you might forget that the definition of “Sport Utility Vehicle” is actually quite vast, and there are still new examples that have some connection to the segment’s rugged origins.

The model year 2022 Toyota 4Runner is one such example. It may not be optimized for soccer practice or pizza-party duties, but it can certainly handle them. Just as crucially, it can also venture out where these mall-dwelling SUVs dare not go. If two years of a pandemic have taught us anything about ourselves, it's that the ability to get out on an adventure is more relevant than ever, and the 4Runner is one vehicle so-equipped to do it.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. It’s been the number one seller for the brand in Canada for years, even before Nissan redesigned the Rogue two years ago. Last year, Nissan added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

2022 Toyota 4Runner

6/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner retained its rugged, adventure-ready design, reminiscent of its 1980s SUV roots. Unlike many modern SUVs that have transitioned to car-based platforms, the 4Runner maintained its connection to the Toyota Tacoma pickup, offering a robust and off-road-capable experience. Its high ride height, boxy proportions, and sharply angled front bumper were all designed for tackling obstacles, making it a niche choice for those who ventured off the beaten path. Inside, the 4Runner's design was functional, though it showed its age with a dash layout reminiscent of the late 2000s. In Canada, the 4Runner was available in Trail and SR5 models, with various TRD and Limited package configurations, each offering unique features and capabilities.

In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Rogue presented a more modern and stylish appearance, with chiseled styling and SUV detailing that conveyed a rugged sense of purpose. The Rogue lineup included S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from $30,898 to $43,748, excluding destination charges. Our test vehicle, a US-specification Platinum trim, featured all-wheel drive, two-tone paint, and a host of upscale features, including diamond-pattern leather seats and a comprehensive suite of technology. The Rogue's design was appealing, making it a popular choice for those seeking a compact SUV with a balance of style and practicality.

Performance

2022 Toyota 4Runner

6/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner was powered by a single 4.0-litre V6 engine, producing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. While this engine was reliable and provided decent acceleration, it felt underwhelming in most driving situations. The power was routed through a five-speed automatic transmission to the standard 4WD with a low range. The 4Runner's ride was harsh and cumbersome, with noticeable body roll, but it excelled off-road, where its suspension absorbed rocks and bumps effortlessly. The TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road models included features like Crawl Control and a locking differential, enhancing their off-road capabilities. The 4Runner had a towing capacity of up to 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds), which was more than most car-based crossovers.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, featured a new turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with a variable compression design, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This engine was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offered a responsive driving experience in urban and suburban settings. The Rogue's CVT included paddle shifters and offered Eco, Auto, and Sport driving modes, with additional Off-Road and Snow modes for AWD versions. While the Rogue's drivetrain lacked highway passing power, it provided a good balance of ride compliance and body control. The Rogue's fuel economy was slightly below expectations, averaging 8.1 L/100 km in combined driving.

Form and function

2022 Toyota 4Runner

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner offered a maximum cargo capacity of 2,540 litres in the two-row version, with 1,337 litres of space behind the second row. The three-row model had slightly less cargo space, with a maximum of 2,514 litres and 1,311 litres behind the second row. The 4Runner's power-open/close rear window was a standout feature, making it easy to stow items in the back. However, the 4Runner's cabin packaging felt dated, and while it wasn't cramped, it could have been more efficient in terms of space utilization.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, designed as a replacement for the traditional family car, offered a spacious and practical interior. It comfortably accommodated four people, with the option to carry a fifth person in the back seat. The Platinum trim featured premium amenities, including a triple-zone automatic climate control system, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, and heated front seats. The Rogue's Zero Gravity seat designs provided comfort, though the rear seat lacked leg support. The Rogue's cargo area offered up to 1,028 litres of space behind the back seat, expandable to 2,064 litres with the back seats folded down. The Rogue's rear doors opened to a nearly 90-degree angle, making it easy to load and unload passengers and cargo.

Technology

2022 Toyota 4Runner

2023 Nissan Rogue

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner came with a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and SiriusXM satellite radio. While the system was straightforward and relied on tactile controls, it lacked advanced features like a head-up display. The 4Runner's infotainment system covered the tech basics, appealing to those who appreciated its simplicity.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, however, featured a more advanced infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a navigation system. The test vehicle also included a wireless smartphone charging pad and a Bose premium audio system. Despite its features, the voice recognition technology struggled with certain requests. The Rogue also had a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display, enhancing the driving experience.

Safety

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner was equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense suite, including forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. It earned four out of five stars for frontal and side-impact testing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with three stars for rollover testing. The 4Runner was backed by a five-year/100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue boasted an extensive array of safety features, including 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, and Safety Shield 360. This suite included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more. Higher trims offered ProPilot Assist with Navi-link, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
