2022 Subaru Ascent Reviews Summary

Subaru owners are a loyal bunch, and for good reason. The automaker’s cars and SUVs enjoy reputations for durability, safety, and getting you where you need to go regardless of weather and road conditions. But there is only one Subaru made to carry more than five people, and it’s the Ascent midsize three-row SUV. This year, Subaru makes one change to the 2022 Ascent lineup, adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact SUV like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must. Competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Acura RDX, Porsche Macan, and others.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is for the Korean automaker as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent, particularly in its Onyx Edition trim, embraced the trend of blacking out shiny exterior trim, offering a sporty appearance that was previously absent. This edition featured blacked-out exterior trim and badges, black 20-inch aluminum wheels, a unique grille design, and special interior trim. The interior was wrapped in water-repellant StarTex synthetic leather, available only in a gray two-tone scheme with light gray stitching, which was a refreshing change from the typical black interiors. However, the StarTex material had a tendency to trap sweat, making ventilated seats a desirable feature, though they were only available on the Ascent Premier.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that connected it to the G70 compact luxury sedan, with styling elements like split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that suggested a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. The GV70's interior was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and a design that was both contemporary and classic. The climate controls were integrated into a curving bezel, and the touchscreen rose organically from the dash, offering a seamless blend of technology and aesthetics. The GV70's cabin exuded luxury, with features like a full touchscreen backed by a rotary dial and button controls, providing a user-friendly experience.

Performance

2022 Subaru Ascent

8/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It featured a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard. The Ascent's fuel consumption was rated at 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined, with our testing averaging 11.5 L/100 km. The engine's flat-four layout contributed to a lower centre of gravity, enhancing handling. The CVT offered eight programmed ratios and manual shift control, allowing for brisk acceleration and commendable passing power. The Ascent's towing capacity was up to 2,270 kilograms, and its X-Mode off-road traction control system, hill descent control, and 22 centimetres of ground clearance provided off-roading capability.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two powertrains: a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The GV70's turbo-four provided ample power for most driving situations, while the V6 catered to performance enthusiasts. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery pack, dual electric motors, and a combined 429 horsepower, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. It offered a range of 383 kilometres and could fast charge from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. The GV70's handling was well-rounded, blending comfort and sportiness.

Form and function

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent could accommodate up to eight passengers, though the third row was best suited for children. The Ascent Onyx Edition was equipped for winter weather with features like water-resistant seat material, triple-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a wiper de-icer. The second-row seats were easy to access, and captain's chairs were available on most trims. The Ascent offered 458 litres of cargo space behind the third row, 1,193 litres behind the second row, and a maximum of 2,061 litres with both rows folded.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 1,611 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 818 litres with the seats in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and a well-designed interior with large cupholders and a centre console tray. The front seats were comfortable and adjustable, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

Technology

2022 Subaru Ascent

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent's base trim came with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player. The Touring trim added an 8-inch display with Starlink connected services. The system included volume and tuning knobs, but the voice recognition technology needed improvement. The Onyx Edition used standard stereo speakers, while the Premier trim offered a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. It included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Available features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, a Lexicon 18-speaker audio system, and the Genesis digital key.

Safety

2022 Subaru Ascent

9/10

2023 Genesis GV70

9/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent received a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the IIHS and five-star crash-test ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rating in rollover resistance. It came standard with EyeSight driver-assist technology, which included adaptive cruise control and lane-centring technology. However, EyeSight's performance was affected by direct sunlight, and its adaptive cruise control and lane-centring technology lacked refinement. Additional safety features included steering responsive LED headlights and reverse automatic braking.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and highway driving assist. The 2.5T Advance Plus added a blind-spot camera system and a 360-degree parking camera system. The GV70 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.
