In Canada, the GLB250 came standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the AMG GLB35 boasted a more powerful drivetrain and sophisticated AWD system. The GLB's design was polarizing, with a steep windshield angle and nearly vertical rear window, prioritizing function over form. The AMG GLB35, with its 21-inch multi-spoke wheels, added some style and presence. Inside, the GLB's cabin was a visual treat, featuring high-definition displays and ambient lighting. However, the controls required acclimation, and the road noise was notably loud, especially with the optional 21-inch wheels.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, was a more conventional design, with proper proportions and chiseled styling that conveyed a rugged sense of purpose. The Rogue lineup included S, SV, SL, and Platinum trims, with prices ranging from $30,898 to $43,748, excluding destination charges. Our test vehicle, a US-specification Platinum trim, featured AWD, two-tone paint, and a host of upscale upgrades, including diamond-pattern leather seats. The Rogue's interior was comfortable, with soft-touch materials and quality controls. However, the engine's character and some drivetrain quirks might not appeal to everyone.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB offered two engine options, both turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-4-cylinders. The AMG GLB35 version was enhanced to produce 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, significantly more than the GLB250's engine. The AMG GLB35 featured an AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD, and an AMG Sport Exhaust system. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, with a fuel consumption rating of 11.2 L/100 km in combined driving. The AMG GLB35 emphasized performance, with a firm ride and some throttle lag, but it excelled on twisty roads, offering a thrilling driving experience.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, meanwhile, featured a new turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with a variable compression design, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. The engine was paired with a CVT, offering Eco, Auto, and Sport driving modes. The Rogue's performance was responsive in urban settings, but it lacked passing power on the highway. The engine's character and some vibration through the accelerator pedal might not appeal to all drivers. The Rogue's fuel economy was rated at 7.7 L/100 km in combined driving, but our test vehicle averaged 8.1 L/100 km.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB was designed for comfort and cargo, with an optional third-row seat suitable for children. Standard features included dual-zone automatic climate control and an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. The GLB offered a 560-litre cargo area, expandable to 1,755 litres with the second-row seat folded. The third-row seat reduced storage space and was less practical in North America.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, as a replacement for the traditional family car, offered a spacious interior with room for four adults and a fifth person when necessary. Our test vehicle featured a triple-zone automatic climate control system, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, and premium leather upholstery. The Rogue's rear doors opened to a nearly 90-degree angle, providing easy access. The cargo area offered up to 1,028 litres of space, expandable to 2,064 litres with the back seats folded. However, the rear seat comfort was lacking, and the key fob design was frustrating.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB featured the MBUX infotainment system, with a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were optional in Canada, the system offered natural voice recognition and a digital assistant. The test vehicle lacked some upgrades like Wi-Fi service and a head-up display.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or 9-inch touchscreen. Our test vehicle had the larger screen, Bluetooth, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a navigation system. The voice recognition technology was limited, and the test vehicle also featured a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB test vehicle lacked the optional Driver Assistance Package, which included adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance. Standard safety features included Active Brake Assist and blind-spot monitoring. Crash-test ratings for the GLB were unavailable.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue came with Safety Shield 360, offering a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and collision avoidance systems.
