2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

2023 Chevrolet Equinox Reviews Summary

Chevy’s compact crossover enters 2023 with some subtle but significant changes. A little extra power for the engine, a more sophisticated braking system, and a trio of new paint colours make the Equinox better than before, but it still looks uphill at some of the more recently updated options in its competitive set, notably the redesigned Honda CR-V and the stylish Kia Sportage.

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2023 Chevrolet Equinox

6/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 underwent subtle yet impactful design updates. New LED headlights and taillights provided distinctive illumination, addressing previous concerns about visibility. The model featured redesigned bumpers, a revised grille, and a fresh rear liftgate, enhancing its premium appeal. The Signature trim stood out with body-colour lower exterior trim, emphasizing Mazda's premium brand aspirations. Inside, the CX-5 retained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents. The new seats improved comfort, offering a sportier driving position.

In contrast, the 2023 Chevrolet Equinox presented a more restrained design. Its chunky front end made the grille appear smaller, offering a refreshing change from aggressive fascias. The Equinox introduced new paint options, including Radiant Red Tintcoat and Harvest Brown Metallic. The interior, though not as upscale as some competitors, was practical and spacious. The Premier trim featured two-tone leather upholstery and standard heated front seats. Despite its dated appearance, the Equinox's interior was functional, with a simple PRNDL shift lever and ample storage.

Performance

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2023 Chevrolet Equinox

6/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. All models came with standard AWD and a revised six-speed automatic transmission for improved responsiveness. Fuel consumption was 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving. The turbocharged variant delivered up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium gas, with a combined fuel consumption of 9.8 L/100 km. The CX-5's driving dynamics were enhanced with increased structural rigidity and reworked suspension, providing a quieter, smoother ride with reduced body roll.

The 2023 Chevrolet Equinox featured a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 175 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. While adequate for city driving, it struggled with acceleration at higher speeds. The six-speed automatic transmission held gears longer, contributing to engine noise. AWD was available but required manual activation. The Equinox's suspension handled bumps well, and the new brake-by-wire system improved braking performance. Despite its powertrain limitations, the Equinox offered tight and accurate steering, making it enjoyable to drive.

2023 Chevrolet Equinox

7/10

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 addressed previous complaints with new, supportive seats and a sportier driving position. Most trims included a height-adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone climate control, and heated and ventilated front seats. The back seat remained snug but offered heated cushions and air vents. Cargo space was 871 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,680 litres with seats folded. The control layout was challenging, lacking a touchscreen and natural voice recognition, but offered wireless charging and adequate storage.

The 2023 Chevrolet Equinox provided 847 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,809 litres with seats folded. Passenger space was ample, with good headroom and legroom. The interior featured higher-quality plastics and practical storage solutions, including cup holders and a centre console bin. The Premier trim's power liftgate operated quietly, and a panoramic sunroof was available on most trims.

Users relied on centre console controls, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 10-speaker Bose sound system was optional on higher trims, providing satisfactory audio quality.

The 2023 Chevrolet Equinox offered a simple yet effective infotainment system. The 8-inch touchscreen on the Premier trim was clear and easy to use, with quick response and good voice recognition. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth were standard, along with a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Premier trim included a wireless charging pad, and a Bose audio system was optional.
