Our test vehicle was the High Tide model, a US-market special edition based on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S trim. It featured LED exterior lighting, a body-colour hardtop with a Sunrider Fliptop, a Gorilla Glass windshield upgrade, and more. The Wrangler's interior was basic, with durable cloth upholstery and a focus on functionality, including floor drain plugs for easy cleaning. Despite its rugged charm, the Wrangler's interior left some wondering where the money was spent, given its price tag nearing $60,000. Jeep made minor updates for 2022, including a new air filtration system and additional paint colours.

The 2022 Ford Expedition underwent several updates, including exterior styling revisions and updated infotainment technology. It featured a new grille, headlights, and bumper, along with redesigned wheels. In Canada, the Expedition came standard with four-wheel drive and was available in XLT, Limited, and Platinum trims, with standard and extended-length body styles. Prices ranged from just under $70,000 to over $95,000, excluding the $2,195 destination charge. The Expedition Timberline trim catered to off-road enthusiasts with all-terrain tires, suspension modifications, and off-roading tech.

Our test vehicle, the Stone Blue Metallic Limited Stealth Edition, featured black 22-inch wheels, blacked-out exterior trim, and a 12.4-inch digital instrumentation display. Inside, the Expedition boasted a redesigned dashboard with the new Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems. The Limited Stealth Edition offered leather-lined seats, a heated steering wheel, and a spacious interior. The Expedition's cabin was comfortable and well-equipped, making it a strong contender for long road trips. Despite its size, the Expedition was surprisingly easy to park, thanks to excellent visibility and advanced parking aids.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler was equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine featuring eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, delivering 285 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the optional Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, the Wrangler was well-suited for challenging weather conditions. However, its fuel consumption was notable, averaging 14.0 L/100 km over a week of driving, despite Natural Resources Canada's estimate of 11.2 L/100 km in combined driving.

However, potential buyers needed to be prepared for frequent fuel stops and a less refined driving experience compared to more conventional SUVs.

Despite its size, the Expedition was surprisingly easy to park, thanks to excellent visibility and advanced parking aids. On the highway, it excelled, providing a quiet and comfortable ride for long journeys. The Expedition's towing capacity of up to 4,173 kg (9,200 lb) made it a versatile choice for those needing to haul heavy loads.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's interior was functional but basic, with durable cloth upholstery and a focus on practicality. Getting in and out of the Wrangler was challenging, especially with a raised suspension, and shorter individuals might struggle. The driving position was close to the steering wheel and dashboard, requiring some acclimation. Visibility was a mixed bag, with some areas offering excellent views while others were compromised. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry and exit difficulties but enjoyed agreeable accommodations once inside.

Cargo space in the Wrangler Unlimited was generous, with 898 litres behind the rear seat and 2,050 litres with the rear seat folded. However, storage options within the cabin were limited, with small trays and compartments. The Wrangler's design prioritized off-road capability and open-air driving, making it a unique choice for those seeking adventure.

The 2022 Ford Expedition excelled in interior comfort and space, offering easy entry and exit with available electric running boards. The cabin was spacious, with power-adjustable, leather-wrapped, heated, and ventilated front seats. The second-row captain's chairs provided ample legroom and comfort, while the third-row seat offered outstanding leg support. Cargo space was generous, with 546 litres behind the third row and up to 2,961 litres with both rear rows folded.

The Expedition's interior was well-appointed, with a wide console, hidden cupholders, and a concealed cubby with a wireless smartphone charging pad. Massaging seats were available on higher trims, enhancing comfort for long journeys. The Expedition's design prioritized passenger comfort and convenience, making it an excellent choice for families and road trips.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's infotainment system was relatively basic, with a 7-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While the larger Uconnect 8.4 system offered upgrades like satellite radio and a premium audio system, the standard setup met most needs. The Wrangler also featured remote engine starting, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. The Cold Weather Group added heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, extending the open-air driving season.

The 2022 Ford Expedition featured Ford's next-generation Sync 4 and Sync 4A infotainment systems. The Safety Group included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors, while the Advanced Safety Group added adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were less than stellar, with a three-star rating for rollover resistance from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS.
