2021 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

Toyota’s minivan got a major makeover for 2021, now entering its fourth generation of production since debuting as a 1997 model. For the first time, the Sienna gets a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain, and not only that—it’s standard equipment. The Sienna Hybrid is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) platform, shared with the Highlander and other current Toyota models.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Sienna

9/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Sienna aimed to redefine the minivan aesthetic with its SUV-like styling. It featured a wide grille and sleek LED headlamp arrays that integrated seamlessly with the Toyota logo, giving it a modern and assertive stance. The redesigned sliding side doors added a sculpted look, enhancing the vehicle's overall appeal. Alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 20 inches complemented the Sienna's exterior, while the interior emphasized width with horizontal lines. The dashboard was simple and uncluttered, and the centre console offered practical storage solutions. The seating was comfortable, with the second and third rows providing ample space for adults, making the Sienna a practical choice for families.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more subtle luxury SUV appearance, especially in its base GLS 450 form. It avoided the flashy grilles of some competitors, offering a refined look. The AMG GLS 63 and Maybach versions added visual drama with features like flared wheel arches and chrome accents. Inside, the GLS boasted a luxurious feel with leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were well-integrated, enhancing the vehicle's modern appeal. While the GLS's interior was high-quality, it was perhaps too subdued for those seeking a more opulent experience.

Performance

2021 Toyota Sienna

8/10

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid marked Toyota's first foray into hybrid minivans, featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, producing a combined 243 horsepower. It offered both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options, with the latter using a separate electric motor for the rear wheels. The Sienna's electronically controlled CVT aimed to maximize fuel efficiency, though it sometimes dulled throttle response. The vehicle's handling was improved with new suspension systems, and it boasted impressive fuel efficiency ratings, with FWD models achieving 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres in the city.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 featured a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The EQ Boost mild-hybrid system added short bursts of power, enhancing performance. While the GLS 450's engine provided ample power, the air suspension's poor body control detracted from the ride quality. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, though it fell short of some competitors. Despite these drawbacks, the inline-six engine offered a smooth and balanced driving experience.

Form and function

The 2021 Toyota Sienna excelled in convenience and functionality, with a standard third-row 60/40-split bench that folded into the floor. The second row could slide up to 63.5 centimetres, providing flexible legroom and easy access to the third row. The Sienna offered ample storage, with 16 cupholders and the ability to carry a full four-by-eight sheet of plywood. Cargo space was generous, with up to 2,860 litres available. The hybrid battery was cleverly positioned under the front seats, preserving cargo space. Power-operated sliding doors and a rear liftgate added to the Sienna's family-friendly features.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a seven-seat configuration with a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench and two third-row seats. An optional six-seat version replaced the bench with captain's chairs. The second-row seats could slide forward, providing excellent legroom. Cargo space was competitive, with up to 2,400 litres available with the second and third rows folded. The GLS featured one-touch power-folding seats and a power tailgate, making loading and unloading easy. However, some ergonomic issues, like the touchscreen's reach and small sun visors, detracted from the overall experience.

Technology

The 2021 Toyota Sienna came equipped with a nine-inch touchscreen, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. It included a range of connectivity features, such as Safety Connect and Remote Connect trials, Bluetooth, and Qi-compatible charging on higher trims. The audio system varied by trim, with a Premium Audio + JBL package available. A rear-seat entertainment system was also offered, enhancing the Sienna's family appeal. The driver benefited from tech features like a digital rearview mirror and remote keyless entry.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. It offered Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and navigation. The voice recognition system was particularly effective, allowing for hands-free operation. However, the touchpad controller was cumbersome, and the navigation system occasionally suggested inefficient routes. Despite these issues, the GLS's graphics and augmented-reality navigation were impressive.

It also had the Star Safety System and blind spot monitoring. The Sienna was equipped with 10 airbags and LATCH connectors for child seats. It received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS and a Five-Star Overall Rating from NHTSA.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Additional features like adaptive cruise control and advanced driver-assistance systems were optional. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of publication.
