2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (non-hybrid V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover from Jaguar Land Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a bold and distinctive design that required some getting used to. Its blunt and bulbous nose, combined with black windshield pillars, gave it an aggressive look, while the swollen haunches attempted to balance the styling. Despite its cartoonishly-flared quarter panels, the Highlander Hybrid's design was expected to become more familiar and less polarizing over time. The interior offered a two-tone look with soft leather for higher trims, but the dashboard's asymmetrical design and reflective 12.3-inch screen could be distracting. While the controls were sensibly laid out, the mix of illumination colours made the gauges appear busy.

In contrast, the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover's redesign was more evolutionary, maintaining a similar look to its predecessor with broad, rounded features and minimal adornment. The most notable change was the rear, where thin LED strips replaced the old square taillights. The Range Rover emphasized its size, especially in the long-wheelbase version, which added 20 centimetres in length. Inside, the cabin was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger touchscreen, offering a modern look. The materials were of excellent quality, with premium leather and rich wood trim, creating a luxurious atmosphere. The Range Rover's solid feel and quiet cabin further enhanced its premium appeal.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 engine to a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, reducing its total output to 243 horsepower. It achieved a combined fuel consumption rating of 6.7 L/100 km, an improvement over the previous generation. However, the driving experience was less enjoyable, with the engine sounding strained during acceleration and the steering feeling lifeless. The regenerative brakes were an improvement, but the ride and handling suffered from unwanted body movement. On smooth roads, the Highlander Hybrid handled well, but it struggled on uneven surfaces.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover offered two powertrains: a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder with 395 horsepower and a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 523 horsepower. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 powertrain provided effortless acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in approximately 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile for its size, with well-managed body roll and a calm driving experience. Rear-wheel steering improved manoeuvrability, and the Terrain Response system optimized off-road capability without compromising ride quality.

Form and function

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Platinum offered comfortable seating for the driver and front passenger, with power adjustments and leather upholstery. The second-row bench seat increased seating capacity to eight, but the narrow cabin made it uncomfortable for three adults. The third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access. Cargo space was generous, with a maximum capacity of 2,387 litres, but storage solutions were limited, and the wireless charger blocked access to the centre storage area.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were cushioned and offered massage functions, while the second row had power recline and sliding adjustments. The optional third row was less spacious but suitable for smaller passengers. Cargo space was limited with all seats up, but folding the third row expanded capacity to 1,153 litres. The split tailgate and air suspension height adjustment made loading cargo easier.

Technology

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came equipped with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Platinum trim featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen, JBL premium audio, and connected services. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with large knobs and shortcut buttons, but the sound system's performance varied. Driver Easy Speak and a video rearview mirror were also available.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover featured a 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro system, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound quality, and additional tech features included Amazon Alexa integration and remote control via a smartphone app.

Safety

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

6/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, which included automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure with steering assist. The system added intersection support and emergency steering assistance. The Highlander received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover came standard with driver assist features such as frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. While crash test results were not available, the Range Rover's safety features performed well during testing. However, some advanced features offered by rivals were absent.
