2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But luxury SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating New York City streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar traditional SUV styling. It featured a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile, reminiscent of the smaller 2021 Grand Cherokee L. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. Its grille leaned forward slightly, with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel center caps had an acrylic glass covering to protect the “Wagoneer” logo. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent front and rear suspension, with an aluminum hood and doors, and a composite tailgate to save weight.

Inside, the Grand Wagoneer shared styling features with the Wagoneer, such as an integrated infotainment touchscreen, a large rotary shift knob, and a two-spoke steering wheel. However, it offered more convenience features and higher-quality materials. The Grand Wagoneer boasted 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests, along with heated/ventilated first- and second-row seats and a heated steering wheel. Nappa leather upholstery was standard, with higher-grade Palermo leather available, complemented by aluminum and American Walnut wood trim. Subtle differences, like Mercedes-style seat controls on the doors and “Grand Wagoneer” spelled out on the dashboard, further set it apart from the Wagoneer.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a redesign that evolved its existing theme rather than a complete restyling. From the front and sides, it maintained a broad rounded face and large expanses of unadorned sheet metal, with a new vertical accent strip under the mirrors. The rear view saw the most significant change, replacing square taillights with thin LED strips integrated into a darker trim element. The Range Rover emphasized its mass, accentuating its presence, especially in the long-wheelbase version, which added eight inches in length.

Inside, the Range Rover was simplified with fewer buttons and knobs, yet retained a familiar design. A larger tablet-like touchscreen replaced the previous dashboard-integrated display, giving the cabin a modern look. Materials quality was excellent, with premium leather and rich wood trim elements. The Range Rover's solid feel was notable, with no detectable creaks even on rough roads. It delivered a refined interior, surpassing competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, and Cadillac Escalade, and rivaling more expensive Maybach or Bentley alternatives.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

6/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, with cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in six seconds, impressive for its roughly 6,400-pound weight. The Grand Wagoneer featured standard four-wheel drive with the Quadra-Drive II system, including a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. It also had the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, offering height adjustability for off-roading or reducing aerodynamic drag on highways.

The Grand Wagoneer boasted 10 inches of ground clearance, a 25-degree approach angle, a 24-degree departure angle, and a 22-degree breakover angle. It could ford up to 24 inches of water and was equipped with skid plates. Despite its powerful V8, the Grand Wagoneer was best driven at a stately pace, as higher speeds resulted in a bouncy ride and imprecise steering. Its size was a limiting factor off-road, and it did not receive Jeep’s “Trail Rated” badge.

The 2022 Range Rover offered two powertrains: the base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and the P530 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The P400 powertrain provided effortless acceleration, reaching zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, impressive for its nearly 6,000-pound weight.

The Range Rover was surprisingly agile for a large luxury SUV, with well-managed body roll enhancing confidence on winding roads. It delivered a calm and composed driving experience, aided by standard rear-wheel-steering for sharper turns. The Range Rover's Terrain Response system automatically adjusted the suspension and drivetrain for optimal traction, maintaining its off-road capability without the drawbacks of truck-based rivals. The ride quality was smooth, with wind and road noise minimized, making it one of the most comfortable luxury SUVs available.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

8/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven passengers with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80, though front space was more limited. The Grand Wagoneer provided 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space with all rows in place and 70.9 cubic feet with the third row stowed. With all rear seats folded, it offered 94.2 cubic feet, less than some rivals.

The Grand Wagoneer had a maximum towing capacity of 9,850 pounds, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. It featured a standard sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins. Forward visibility was somewhat limited by the hood, but the standard 360-degree camera system helped mitigate this issue.

The 2022 Range Rover offered ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were cushioned for long-distance comfort, with available massage functions. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large center console bin. The second row provided generous space for taller passengers, with power recline and sliding adjustments, climate controls, and USB-C charge ports.

The optional third row was accessible with a button, though headroom was limited for adults. Cargo space behind the third row was 17.1 cubic feet, expanding to 43.1 cubic feet with the third row folded. At maximum capacity, it offered 93 cubic feet of cargo space. The split tailgate facilitated loading, with buttons to lower the air suspension for easier access.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a McIntosh audio system, and a 4G-LTE WiFi hotspot. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, with an optional rear-seat entertainment system. The Grand Wagoneer also had a separate 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, Amazon Alexa connectivity, and Fire TV for Auto.

The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an Android-based operating system and over-the-air updates, powered the Grand Wagoneer. While the screen was occasionally slow to respond, the head-up display was clear and legible.

The 2022 Range Rover featured a 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, paired with a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system delivered excellent sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade available. Additional tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and remote control via a smartphone app.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included a driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. Active Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering, with a hands-free version planned for future release.

The 2022 Range Rover also lacked crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS. Standard safety features included frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system. While adequately equipped, some rivals offered additional features like advanced high beams and emergency stop functions.
